Brian stared at Jessica, confused. "Ruined his birthday party? I don't understand, how could we have --"
"I don't know Brian, I really don't. He just --" she struggled to find the words to explain what she had just heard, or what she thought she had just heard, "He hates us Brian." Jessica didn't say anything else. She couldn't, so instead, she ran from the room.
Brian didn't follow her. He was still too hurt from what she had said earlier to even realize what she had just said. AJ couldn't hate them; why would he? They were his friends.

"Come on Eric, we're leaving."
"Why?" he asked, not turning away from the television set where he and Nick were duking it out on the play station.
"Now, Eric."
The tone of Jessica's voice made even Nick stop playing to see what was wrong. Seeing tears in her eyes distraught him, why did life have to be so hard on such a nice young girl? Before he got a chance to ask what was wrong, she took Eric by the hand and walked out of the room, so Nick turned back to his game.
It was at least five minutes before Nick realized she had stopped in the doorway and was staring at him.
"What are you thinking?" she asked.
"Right now? I'm thinking Jesus Christ, you scared the shit out of me!"
"Nick!" she scolded, then looked down to see if Eric had been listening, "I mean, do you think I'm crazy? I'm sure you know what's going on; Brian just told me he loves me. I've created that scene ten thousand times in my head these past few months, and not once did I even consider not taking him back... so tell me, am I crazy?"
Nick stood up and looked Jessica in the eyes for a long time, then finally said, "Of course not."
That was all she needed to hear. "Thank you, Nick." Then she took Eric by the hand again and walked out of the house.
Brian, whose mind still hadn't registered what Jessica had said about AJ, walked into AJ's room.
"What do you want?" AJ snapped.
"She said no," he said, still in a daze.
"What're you talking about?" AJ asked, annoyed.
"I asked if she'd forgive me and take me back... and she said no."
"What?" AJ asked incredulously, jumping up off his bed, "She said no?"
"Yeah, don't sound too depressed."
"Sorry man," AJ was too happy to sound depressed though, "Oh man, I can't believe I just said that to her... is she still here?"
AJ was already half way out the door before Brian finally responded.

Jessica dropped Eric off at her parents house and asked them to watch him for the remander of the evening, then drove down to the closest beach; about two hours away. Parking on a cliff, she turned the radio on, then got out of her truck and sat down in the bed of it.

She sat silently and listened to the waves crashing against the shore and the music flowing in the wind. In the back of her mind, Jessica heard a car drive up, but she was too lost in the peaceful atmosphere to pay it any heed.
"Jess," she turned around to see who was calling her name.
I know you feel like the walls are closing in on you It's hard to find relief and people can be so cruel
"Nick," she must've sounded surprised, "You know, of all the people to show up here..."
"You would never have guessed me. I know, I'm not really that mooshy or anything; I just wanted to make sure you were ok."
Jessica gave him a hug, "You're wrong. You're exactly who I would've expected. I knew I could count on you."

"You know, Brian would never had said anything if he didn't think it was important that you knew."
"Can we not talk about Brian right now?" fresh teard filled her eyes as she put her hand to her chest, "It hurts."
"I know," he said, squeezing her tightly.

Jessica wished that moment could last forever. She felt at piece with the world, like she had finally found serenity. Nick was glad that he had been able to help her.

AJ banged on Jessica's door... where could she be? Sitting down on her porch, he rested his head in his hands. Now what?
