Jessica left her car at the beach and walked to Brian's house. She stood patiently waiting for him to open the door. When he finally did, she found his hair was ruffled, probably from sleep.
"Did I wake you?"
"Actually," he said, looking at his watch, "Yeah, you did. It's eleven."
"You had to check your watch to see if I woke you?" she stiffled a laugh, "Sorry... can I come in?"
"No," he sighed, "I think it'd be best if you didn't."
"Oh," she looked down, "Brian, I'm so sorry... it's just, I love you. I always have, and I think I always will, but it's over between us."
Brian, unable to meet her gaze, was silent for a long time. Finally he spoke, "Then I guess there's nothing left for me to do but wish the best for you and AJ."
Jessica raised an eyebrow. What was he talking about? Did he know something she didn't, "Brian, what...?"
"You're in love, Jess. Everyone knows it but you two. That's why I had to tell you how I feel. So you know that I can be happy for you -- like you were happy for me."
Jessica smiled, then pulled a chain out of her pocket. On it was a little heart shaped charm that said 'To my bestest best friend, J.M.', "I kept it Brian. You're still my best friend." She gave him a hug and turned to leave.
"Hey Jess, lemme know how it turns out."
She turned around and smiled, "I think it's gonna be ok."
