Stress not only affects the body, but also feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Stress can be experienced as strong feelings, primarily negative emotions like anxiety, anger, sadness, etc., but even positive emotions are a reflection of stress!

 

Negative Emotions: Anger, Guilt, Envy, Anxiety, Shame, Jealousy, Fear, Sadness, Disgust. 

 

Stressors and lack of coping can lead to mental illness/ substance abuse, especially where predisposing factors, such as genetic predisposition, already exist. 

 

Several disorders are caused or affected by stress: Adjustment disorders, Post Traumatic Stress disorder, Brief reactive psychosis, Psychosomatic disorders, Onset of depression, Relapse of schizophrenia, Increased alcohol use. Other information suggests that stress may be a factor in phobias and other forms of mental illness.

 

Wow! Pretty scary, huh? Guess we better learn how to cope with stress, since we can’t get rid of it! As we move forward in these pages, we will have to get into some real WORK!
