Refrigerator Notes
03/07/07 - The Lion Ledger – The Grace Day School newspaper has been going great. We are working on our second issue and hope it will be published after spring break. In other news, there will not be a newspaper meeting on April 4th.
The Computer Club – Be on the lookout for a flyer about this after school activity. It should be coming home soon and will have information for 5th and 6th graders.
Library –
Kindergarten, First, Second, Third, and Fourth – We have been gearing up for the book fair. In the past few classes we have read some of the books at the book fair and watched a video about some of the authors and illustrators. This has given the students a chance to see how these important people create children’s books.
Fifth and Sixth Grades – We have been working on developing research skills. In particular, we have been working with dictionaries. I have given the students many challenging tasks that allow them to use every aspect of a dictionary.
Seventh Grade – The students are close to finishing their reading of the novel Sounder by William H. Armstrong. When we complete the novel, we will be watching the film.
Enrichment (Sixth Grade and Eight Grade) – Many of the students have finished their projects and have begun their presentations. It has been great to see the unveiling of the finished projects.
03/07/07 - The Lion Ledger – The Grace Day School newspaper has started meeting after school on Wednesdays. As a result, The Lion Ledger reporters have begun writing their articles for the first issue. The students have two meetings to complete their articles. The third meeting is our printing day. Our first printing day is on March 14th. Consequently, the first issue should be circulating the GDS community on March 15th. I hope you enjoy the first issue because the students are working hard at creating a newspaper that is a good representation of their interests and beliefs.
Library –
Kindergarten and First Grade – The students have been enjoying some winter themed children’s literature. Currently, they are learning about Theodor Geisel who wrote under the pen name Dr. Seuss. They are enjoying his rhyming text and outlandish characters.
Second, Third, and Fourth – These classes have been exploring the library’s biography section. We have read about Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, Ben Franklin and many others. The students have also created the book jacket to their own autobiographies.
Fifth and Sixth Grades – Does it matter how you butter your bread? In Dr. Seuss’s masterpiece The Butter Battle Book, two nations start a nuclear arms race over this subject. The students are studying this book and are analyzing how this book could help the nations of the world.
Seventh Grade – The students are reading the novel Sounder by William H. Armstrong. It is the story of an African-American boy living with his sharecropper family in Depression-era Louisiana. The boy and his family face many hardships. The seventh grade students are studying how the boy’s thirst for knowledge help him to overcome these difficulties.
Enrichment (Sixth Grade and Eight Grade) – The students’ research on the subject of endangered animals is finally close to completion. The students have competed many of the important parts to a research paper. Now they must put all of their research together into a paper. After they have written the paper, they will then give a short presentation to the class. I am very happy with quality of work that they have done all year.

11/29/06 - In lower school we are currently looking at how the library is organized. As a result, the students have started by learning how fiction books are organized and even how to alphabetize a few books on their own.
In upper school we have been reading many short stories. The students have learned that authors must do things differently when writing short fiction. One of the main things that authors do differently in this genre has to do with how they give the readers clues. In particular, authors of short fiction enjoy giving readers false clues. These "red herrings" directly affect the story's ending. The students have been studying the importance of these red herrings.
