Things to Do and See in Maui

This is a great overall site here

Restaurants and Other Food-

In town (Lahaina):

- Cheeseburger in Paradise – Casual, live music, great T-shirts
- Kimos – great food, on the water, good for quiet drinks w/ tiki torches
- Lahaina Fish Company -fresh fish/seafood, on/over the wate
- BJ’s Pizzeria - fun murals, great food, live music, go a night that John Kane is performing (He’s great)
- Pioneer Inn - great for macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup for breakfast, also nice and casual for drinks in the evening, usually with live island music
- Chain, but good – Bubba Gumps, Hard Rock, etc.
- Safeway – Great if you have a condo with a kitchen. Stock up on breakfast, snack, picnic food and libations.

Within 10-15 min drive of Front St, Lahaina:
- Leilani’s - at Whaler’s Village - great seafood, usually my one ‘Nice’ dinner out on my trip, make reservations early and ask for an ocean view table on the deck. I recommend the fresh crab, Ahi or Mahi Mahi
- Sea House Restaurant at the Napili Kai Beach Club - nice setting right on a coved beach.
- Aloha Mixed Plate – A lot of food for a good price. Casual, by the Cannery.

In Hana:
- Plan to buy a cheap cooler and bring some food with you. There are limited restaurants and only 2 small convenient stores.

Tours/Activities –

Barefoot's Cashback Tours 834 Front Street • Lahaina Toll Free 888-222-3601 Local 808-661-8889 www.tombarefoot.com After my last trip, I decided I would book my excursions nowhere else. Reservations on the spot, competitively priced and NO timeshare talks (beware of those in town). Just stop into the shop while wandering around town.

My recommendations:

Luau: Old Lahaina Luau No question. The Marriot and Hyatt are nice backups, but not the same.
Snorkel: Take a raft out of Lahaina Harbor (Maalaea Harbor is 20 minutes further out of town). The raft is more fun, (smaller groups which make it a more flexible and not so scripted trip and you can ride the pontoons) unless you want to be with 50 people on a big boat. Snorkeling is better on Lanai than at Molokini, but if you do a Lanai snorkel, be sure it includes Turtle Town. However, if you do want a big boat, go with the Lahaina Princess or Pride of Maui.
Biking down Haleakala: Many family and friends have told me good things about them.
Blue Water Rafting: I have always wanted to do this (explore the coasts and caves you can’t get to otherwise) but I have not gone yet.
Zip-Line (Totally AMAZING)Skyline Adventure Tours
Line 1: Length = 125' Height = 25'
Line 2: Length = 150' Height = 70'
Line 3: Length = 225' Height = 65'
Line 4: Length = 330' Height = 40'
Line 5: Length = 750' Height = 125'
ATV Haleakala
Cocktail Cruise: I think the Kaulana is the only boat that does that.
Whale Watching: December – May
Parasailing: May - December

Nightlife –

- Moose’s (casual, homey, restaurant/bar/DJ/dancing)
- Hula Grill – Barefoot Bar (pretty crowded, but fun, right on the water
- Dinner or cocktail cruise

Hana –

- Have to rent/buy CD to listen to on the way, it’s a great way to know the good stops/waterfalls to see.
- If you decide to stay a night, contact the State Park Division Office at 808-984-8109 and reserve a cabin at Waianapanapa State Park. About $45 and you will have to send cashiers check/money order for half to reserve it and pay the balance when you arrive. The cabins are rustic (so don’t expect anything fancy) but do provide cooking and cleaning supplies, towels and bedding.
- You can read my review here ("Time to see another part of the Island...")

Shopping:

- 505 Front Street
- Whalers Village - upscale but fun to walk around, has a whale museum, Leilani’s, the Hula Grill, among other places.
- The Shops at Wailea – VERY Upscale, but fun to walk around
- The Shops at Kapalua
- Front Street Lahaina - Shops, Restaurants, Galleries Galore
- The Cannery Mall - Regular Locals/Tourists Mall
- Kmart, etc by the Airport - Not really my style, but awesome if one of the first things you say when walking off the plane is, “I forgot my toothbrush/sunblock/batteries/etc.”. It will be cheaper than any place in town, even Safeway.
- ABC Stores - Don’t worry, you can’t miss them, there are several in town. For all your souvenirs and local food cravings (macadamia nuts, coconut syrup, spam sushi)
- Hilo Hattie’s – More upscale than ABC Stores (barely), but not overpriced, souvenirs. They will even ship home for you. Great quality island jewelry.

Recommended Stops:

- Makena – Drive down to Makena until you can’t drive anymore. Park and hike through the Lava beds
- Mile Marker 14 – Great snorkeling off the side of the road. Just be sure to do it at high tide because it can be shallow and there is lots of coral to bump into. Be careful when hanging your towels on the trees. I have on more than one occasion, found spiders of tarantula caliber, near my things. The trees have nice holes they like to live in.
- Big Beach – Near Wailea, beautiful white sand beach, better for swimming and sunning than snorkeling. Little Beach is a nude beach. If you don’t want to be around the crowds, drive past the main parking lot entrance. On the right hand side of the road about half a mile up, you may see other cars parked off the side of the road. You will see a few port a potties in the trees to your right, park on the side of the road. Walk the short path and you will be at the more deserted end of the beach.
- Black sand beach and caves at Waianapanapa – You will see this if you go to Hana, it is walking distance from the cabins
- Botanical Gardens – Beautiful to drive though. You can see where the opening scene from Jurassic Park was filmed and carve your name into the Autograph Tree.
- Kepaniwai Gardens – Beautiful Japanese gardens on the way to Iao Valley.
- Hyatt Regency – See the parrots and penguins in the atrium
- Tedeschi Winery – You can sample and buy their Pineapple wine.
- Iao Valley – Beautiful and great for hiking. Bring a jacket, you will be in the rainforest and it can be damp.
- Oheo Gulch – near Hana, bring a bathing suit and swim under or dive off of the falls. There is also, from what I hear, a great hike up the trail from the pools.
- Palapala Ho'omau Congregational Church – At about 1 mile past the Oheo gulch parking lot will be a small driveway and sign on your left. Just past Mile Marker #41. Cute church in a pretty park with an amazing view. This is where Charles Lindbergh’s grave is. There are picnic tables at the end of the park, a great place to stop for a snack.
- Kapalua Resort – Ritzy Resort, great for strawberry milkshakes in the poolside restaurant while watching for celebrities.
- Art Night – Friday Night - Plan to eat dinner in town and wander the street, stores and galleries tend to be open later this night.
- Saturday or Sunday – Art under the Banyan Tree'– You can find some great gifts for yourself or others. Lot’s of local artists show their stuff (Paintings, Jewelry, Raku, Wood Sculpting, etc.)
