Grove cemetery
was established in 1898 and is located to the north of the city in an area known as Bucksburn. It
is situated next to Persley Road on what has become a major traffic
route to the north of the city. Traffic flow is heavy at all times and
parking is tricky at the cemetery itself. I recommend you park opposite
the cemetery at the walled garden car park and walk across.
The established part of the cemetery lies on a fairly steep slope,
but the main paths are tarmac so the going is easy. Between the
rows of stones there are large swathes of grass and this is even and
well maintained. The later parts of the cemetery to the west are
on mostly level ground.
Due to the heavy traffic this cemetery has lost its tranquil air. The
traffic can be heard even at the very highest levels at the back of the
cemetery. A real pity. As one of the outer lying city
cemeteries there are regular reports in the newspapers of vandalism, but
I saw little out of place on my most recent visit. There are many
mature trees which enhances the layout and offsets the largely regular
pattern of the layout.
Many
locals from Woodside, Bucksburn and other areas to the north of the city
are buried at the Grove. No particular outstanding memorials but still a
mature and pretty graveyard, especially in the summer and autumn.
Recommended.
