*This covered bridge was built by Christian Bible, grandfather of Jacob Biel Bible! It was built ca. 1800. It still stands today, but is in need of repair!

Jake lived in Del Rio and Naugh in Cocke County, Tennessee. In 1840 and 1850 census, he and Arabel were living in Greene Co. and by 1860, they were living in Taylorsburg (later called Edwina), Cocke Co. In 1892, Jake and Abigail were living in Naugh, Cocke County, Tennessee.
Jake joined the Union Army July 1, 1863, in Cocke County as a Private and was mustered August 11, 1863, Camp Nelson, Kentucky, into K Company, 8th Regiment Tennessee Infantry Volunteers as a sergeant. He was mustered out July 30, 1865, at Company Shops, North Carolina.

Christian Bible, Grandfather of Jacob, moved his family to Greene County, TN, in the early 1790's from Hampshire Co, VA/WV. The Conestoga wagon (see above) that was used during this migration is now on display at the DAVY CROCKET TAVERN, in Morristown, TN. It is a State Historical Site. *For dimensions of the wagon, (see middle inset above).

Estil Barb Bible (son of Ezra) wrote the following about Jake: "By trade, he was a Blacksmith of the first order. He could make anything out of iron or steel that could possibly be made in a Blacksmith's shop - from table cutlery to the heaviest farm tools used on farms in his day. *Jacob made the spinning wheel and flax wheel for his daughter Emeline for a wedding gift. They are both in possession of her gr-granddaughter and will be passed along to future generations. Both are pictured here!
Uncle Jake was overloaded with fun and he loved to play tricks on people and some of them were dirty tricks. When I was in school in Mosheim, I would sometimes go home with Enoch Bacon on Friday and stay overnight with Uncle Conway Hall who was Enoch's grandfather and lived with the Bacon family. Uncle Conway and Uncle Jake grew up together and Uncle Conway would spend hours telling me about the tricks they played on each other and other people. From what Uncle Conway told me, no one ever played a trick or joke on Uncle Jake without getting paid back with his own coin or worse.
I will relate a couple of the yarns that Uncle Conway told me about the tricks they played on each other. They used to fish together with a basket and sometimes they would go to the basket together and sometime separately; they had a grapevine fastened to the basket which reached to the top on the water with a float fastened to it. The old grapevine had been used so long that it was rotten and once Uncle Jake got there first and was raising the basket; just as he got it to the top of the water, the grapevine broke and Uncle Jake tumbled backward into the river. By that time, Uncle Conway was on the bank and witnessing the fall hollowed out 'Ha, Ha, Ha, did you get wet Jake?' They proceeded to get a new grapevine; baited the basket and went home. A few days later, Uncle Conway went out in the river in a canoe and began to raise the basket; he thought it seemed very heavy, and just as he got it to the top of the water the grapevine broke and he fell backward into the river. About that time, Uncle Jake raised up on the bank and hollowed out 'Ha, Ha, Ha, did you get wet Con?' Uncle Conway said the 'old devil' had slipped back and sawed the grapevine almost into on purpose to give him a good ducking. This is just an example of the tricks to get even. To sum it all up Uncle Jake was just a Bible like the rest of us Bibles with a few oddities thrown in!"
