Mac Morgan, 89, Bass-Baritone Who Went on to Teach Voice, Dies

Mac Morgan was an American bass-baritone who sang on radio, television and the stage from the 1940s to the 1970s and who was later chairman of the voice at Boston University, died on June 12, 2007, in Carrollton, Ga., where he lived. He was 89. He died of complications of an appendectomy, said his daughter Anne Morgan. Mac Morgan had been singing in concert halls and on the radio for years when he was asked to be a soloist at the Mass in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross for John F. Kennedy after the president was assassinated. For the first time, he worried he might not make it through Mozart's "Requiem." In 1946 he became a regular on NBC Radio’s long-running series “Highways in Melody.” In 1958 he appeared in the NBC Opera Company’s televised production of Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte,”. He sang on “The Bell Telephone Hour” with Joan Sutherland, on a program that included Peggy Lee.

Brilliant Teen Born to Write Symphonies

At age 18, Dominik Maican is already an acclaimed composer, with six symphonies, a mass, chamber music pieces, solo piano works and songs to his credit. Dominik is a U.S. citizen, but was born in Koln, Germany, and moved to Washington, DC, in 1991 with his parents Drs. Valerica Maican and Marcel Maican. Dominik beganstudying piano at the age of 3 and composition at the age of 5 with his mother. He isthe proud recipient of nine piano awards and over 40 awards for musical composition

This fall Maican will attend Indiana University, home to one of the largest music schools in the United States. He says he hopes to get a well-rounded education and leave some of his concentrated music studies behind.

Death of Belgian conductor Francois De Ridder

Chief Warrant Officer Francois De Ridder, conductor since 2003 of the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides, was killed in a tragic accident on June 16, 2007. The conductor of the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides died during a recent fire department intervention. Born in 1951.

Honors for Steven Stucky and George Tsontakis

At the annual Ceremonial of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York, Steven Stucky [left] was inducted as a newly-elected member, and George Tsontakis [right] was honored with the fourth Charles Ives Living Award, which provides a generous stipend for three years, enabling the composer to concentrate on composition, without other salaried employment during that time.
