Due to heavy audience demand the Friday franchise was resurrected one year after the supposed The Final Chapter with a brand new entry and, according to the somewhat misleading title, a new beginning.
The film opens with a terrific opening sequence that shows young Tommy Jarvis (Corey Feldman) and one of his pals sloshing through a rain-soaked cemetary towards Jason's grave. As thunder roars and lightning flashes in the night sky, they proceed to unearth the supposedly dead killer, then look on terror as he comes alive to continue slashing.
But not quite. The scene turns out to be nothing more than a dream sequence and, unfortunately, the last we see of the "real" Jason.
The rest of the movie revolves around a now grown Tommy (played by John Sheperd). Still haunted by the horrible memories of his fateful encounter with Jason, he is sent away to a clinic to receive therapy and deal with his tumultous past. When fellow patients begin disappearing Tommy begins to belive that Jason has once again returned from the grave.
No dice. This killer turns out to be a disgruntled medic named Roy (Dick Weiand) who has taken on Jason's M.O. in order to avenge the death of his son.
Though the film, directed by Danny Steinmann (Savage Streets), proved to be relatively succesful at the box office, the absense of Jason left a bad taste in a lot of fans mouths.
