Scripture Memory Tips

Memlok Site MAP   Link to "Tips" from your site

Sometimes I feel like I've done everything wrong there is to do regarding Scripture memory. Except ONE....Quit!
This list is from Memlok's system, cards or computer, so some are more related to Memlok. But, most are simple practical ideas I've found over the years in various places or in my experience. Hope you find something helpful for you and yours! Please copy and use however you want and please send me your ideas so I can add them here.

1. Make review time a priority, not something you "work in". Review just before something you do everyday (breakfast, turn on radio in car, devotions, practice instrument, clear the table, bathe) etc.
2. Start a new topic if you've lost motivation on your current one.
3. Put a check on the card when you have used the verse or it has been used in your life.
4. Substitute a verse you prefer by using any of the 48 blank cards in Memlok.
5. Laminate copies of the Summary Card when done with a topic so everyone will have one.
6. Write it out in pencil, or on a white board. Repeat verse each time you erase a word or phrase.
7. Tape record the new verse several times with pauses. Listen, and say the verse during pauses.
8. Try to talk outloud for five straight minutes about the verse, alone, with a group or your family.
9. Turn the timer to 5 minutes while each child reviews.
10. About numbers: notice sequence Jms. 3:4,5; similarities 2 Chr. 7:14 and 2 Cor. 7:10; multiples Lk. 15:20; duplications Mk. 15:15; odds 1 Cor. 3:13-15; evens 1Thes. 4:16-18.
11. Visualize where it is on the Summary Card. Say out loud "It's between this picture and that one."
12. Write out the first letter of each word or key word. Then practice saying the whole verse from this.

13. Enlarge the Summary Card (p.48-52) and make up games. Cut it up, draw out of hat, color, trace etc.
14. Notice alphabetical order of words you mix up. 1 Tim. 1:17 eternal, immortal, invisible NASB
15. Pray through your verse phrase by phrase in the first person, adding your thoughts.
16. Yell the word or phrase you always miss, as you review.
17. Review out loud in this order: Topic-Reference-Verse-(no stopping for breath here!)-Reference.
18. Look at the other side of the card every time. Read it aloud. Move your finger along each word.
19. Don't immediately look on the back when you can't remember! Make your mind do the work of recall. Recall locks the verse in much more than repetition.
20. Keep flip pad(s) around with hand drawn picture on front and verse on back. Let kids draw their own.
21. Buy a "special" stuffed animal or puppet to teach application and meaning. He comes out once a week to storytell, share a problem he is having (verse has answers) etc. Give him a fun name.
22. Use both sides of the brain by tracing the picture. Draw one you like better. Paste it on. Send it in!
23. Accent memorized verses with a common color in your Bible.
24. Be sure you learn it word perfect.
25. Ask a small group or ministry team to give 5 minutes a week for listening to verses in pairs.
26. Make up a melody for the verse. Please send your Memlok Melodies in on cassette!
27. Use traveling or waiting time to say verses together, in turns, or each saying the "next" word.
28. The first person says the verse. One by one the rest join in and repeat it together.
29. Occasionally list 3 rewards you'd like for memory progress in order of priority. Make contracts.
30. Commit one quiet time a week to this verse and its context to apply the verse. Memorization without application is nearly useless. Try the Memlokİ Seven Devotional Tool's reproducible Meditation Sheet.
31. Learn your verse phrase by phrase and do start next week's verse even if you're not ready yet.
32. As a family, make up motions you do together to say the whole verse. This is fun and it works!
33. If you have already memorized the verse in another version, don't try to change!
34. Use the statements on the front of the card like quiz questions.
35. Precede your review with some form of exercise. Studies show the mind is more alert.
36. No amount of memory aids can replace self-discipline. Without that, any memory plan will fail.
37. WALK while you review your cards. You'll FOCUS more and find application can come easily. Talking out loud while you walk will increase that.
