The "GLENDELLA"
It wasn't hard for the post office to deliver a letter addressed to "The Large White House on the hill - Doaktown". In fact, tourists regularily stop to gaze with surprise at the white columned mansion which looks as if it is waiting for Scarlett O'Hara to appear on the verandah.
A Victorian style home, over 60 years old, the "Glendella" is situated on a hill overlooking the South West Miramichi River in Doaktown, New Brunswick, Canada. It is privately owned by Clarence and Glenna Taylor. There are over 25 rooms finished in Victorian decor with fancy lace, antique furniture, beautiful dolls and georgeous Chinese and Indian carpeting laid on patterned hardwood floors. Some interior doors are inlaid with stained glass.
Over 25 stately pillars help to form the structure of the glassed-in Sunrooms and Balcony. There is also a collection of chandeliers, large figurines, lamps and wallcoverings imported from Germany. The Spiral Staircase in the hallway was made from one of the "famous" aged trees of New Brunswick (listed in the Book of Famous Trees). The tree, over 100 years old, had been struck by lightning prior to becoming the materials source for this magnificent staircase. The third floor features a cathedral ceiling with original beams, and beautiful windows overlooking the Miramichi River.
Although this is a private home, Mrs. Taylor enjoys sharing it with
visitors, and neighbours are accustomed to seeing the occasional Tour Bus parked outside the Mansion.
Located on Route 8 in the West End of Doaktown, this mansion is regarded as the showplace of the Village. The house is a "must see" on any visit to the Doaktown area. Daily tours are available for the modest admission fee of $4.00 Can.
