Grand Manan Island

Grand Manan Island is a true "nature lover's paradise". The largest of the Fundy Isles it measures 15.31 miles long (28.4 km) and 6.7 miles wide (12.4 km), and is located between the shores of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the Bay of Fundy, which has the highest tides in the world.

The island is only accessible by ferry service from Black's Harbour, New Brunswick. During the 90 minute crossing you will leave the "mainland" as Grand Mananer's say, and sail approx. 22 miles (35 kilometres) to "one of the best keep secrets for a vacation destination". As you approach Grand Manan Island you will begin to have the feeling of isolation and tranquility - which is exactly what attracts visitors. All eyes should be on the horizon for it is not uncommon to view seabirds and even whales during the ferry crossing.

Once Grand Manan Island comes into view you quickly begin to appreciate its rugged and unspoiled beauty. You first notice the western shores rising from the Bay of Fundy to spectacular cliffs which tower up to 400 ft. Gradually you begin to see signs of civilization - herring weirs dotting the coastline and fishing boats going about their business. As you approach the bustling community of North Head, Swallowtail Lighthouse will be flashing its beacon - welcoming you to this island paradise!!

Island residents live exclusively along the eastern shores in small individual communities. They are proud, hard working, friendly individuals numbering approximately 2700. The major industry of the island remains commercial fishing for such tasty seafoods as lobster, scallops and herring. Local dining facilities take advantage of what the Bay of Fundy has to offer, offering these items on their menus.

Grand Manan has been known as a mecca for bird watchers since Audubon visited the island in 1833. Over 338 species have been reliably identified therefore Grand Manan is ideal for bird watching enthusiasts.

If you simply want to get away from the hustle and bustle, neon lights and concrete world you may live in, make Grand Manan Island your vacation destination. It is a true nature lover's paradise - unspoiled, uncommercialized, blessed with an abundance of whales, birds, wildflowers and fantastic scenery which will take your breath away. With sandy beaches and rugged cliffs forming its coastline plus groomed hiking trails and unique craft shops, it has something for everyone!
