Chapter Two

“Kevin? If you’re there, pick up!” Beep! Kevin raced towards the answering machine, fresh out of the shower. I could see his towel slipping. Hah! Falling… falling… Ooh, not too bad a view! He pulled the towel up around his waist again, and he continued to run for his phone.

“Shira? You there?” Kevin said frantically into the telephone.

“Kevvy? Good, you’re home. What are you doing tonight?” Shira, Kevin’s longtime girlfriend, asked.

“Nothing, yet. Why, what did you have in mind?”

“Well, I thought maybe we could catch a movie,” Shira replied. No, honestly, Kevin! She just wants you for your money! Damn, too bad I can’t interfere… he belongs with Allie, not Shira. But the stars have him destined and no one but Him can change the great quilt in the sky.

“Sure, might as well enjoy my break. But it has to be later, because I have to meet with Allie today,” Kevin said.

“Who’s Allie?”

“I told you about her, remember? She’s the one writing the book about us,” Kevin answered.

“Oh, yeah, I forgot. Sorry,” Shira said. “But am I so wrong for wanting to have my boyfriend to myself? I don’t want to have to share you with anyone.”

“No, baby, you’re not wrong. And you know that I wish I could spend every second of every day with you, but I can’t. I have to work. I have to make my living somehow. And it’s always been my dream, doing what I do. How many people get to live their dream?” Sap, sap, and sap…

This’ll go on forever. Shira will get all pouty, and Kevin will feel guilty, and will promise to spend all his free time with her. Shira won’t be convinced, and Kevin will feel so guilty that he’ll buy her something incredibly frivolous to make up for it, and take her out to the fanciest restaurant in town… This had happened a thousand times before, and will happen a thousand times again…
