Zurich

Tuesday, October 9, 2001

While I waited for my computer to get repaired, Mom and I went for a tour of Zurich, Switzerland's largest city and the center of high finance and high learning. You may never have heard of Bern, even though it's the capital, but everybody has heard of Zurich, so we figured we'd better take a look.

We only had a couple of hours to look around Zurich, so we opted for a tour via "classic trolleycar." Unfortunately the trolley car tour wasn't ideal for taking pictures, so many of the prettiest parts of ?Zurich, notably the university area, aren't included here.
By the way, Zurich is beautiful but I am glad we chose to bivouack in Bern instead. Bern is smaller, less crowded and hurried, and prettier, with the valley of the Aar surrounding the town on three sides.

This is Fraumuenster ("Lady Church") as seen from Groessmuenster ("Big Church"). Apparently the site of Fraumunster was chosen by Barbarossa the Great because some miracle happened here. Sorry for the lack of details.

The bus stopped near the Arboretum on Lake Zurich, so we asked a nice Canadian lady to take our picture with the lake in the background.

The Quaibruecke, again back near the two big churches.

Guild hall on Groessmuensterplatz. This is where Churchill admonished Europe to rebuild after the war.

See, what did I tell you?

My friends Terry and May. These two live on the scenic shores of Lake Zug, in the town of the same name.

Flowers and candles outside Zug town hall. Unfortunately a tragedy occurred recently when a deranged civil servant stormed into a town hall meeting and opened fire.
