The Baerengrabe Bears

Wednesday, October 9, 2001

One of the nice things about arranging a one-month stay in a particular city is that we can slow down and just amble about. Today we revisited the Baerengrabe, or bear pits, where we watched an incredibly corny movie about the history of Bern inside the hall and then went outside to watch the bears play and feed. If you had to be a bear, this would probably be one of the best bear jobs you could get.

I had to get really close to take this shot. I climbed into the bear pit and walked slowly up to the bear, feeding it some berries before snapping this picture. No, not really!

This bear was so lazy, with people throwing him food left, right and center, he didn't even bother moving. If he couldn't catch the food in his mouth before it hit the ground, he didn't want it.

By the way, the Baerengrabe sells bags of carrots, apples and other healthy things to feed the bears. No popcorn, please.

These guys were begging. The big one got up on his hind legs and crossed his paws over his chest when he begged.
