Ancient Rome

October 21, 2001 (afternoon)

In the afternoon we toured the ruins of the ancient city of Rome, in the valley below the Palatine Hill. "Tour" is perhaps not the word, because our guide merely told us a few jokes and let us loose. I had to take pictures first and look them up afterward. This is the Colosseum, called the Flavian Amphitheater at the time. More on this in tomorrow's episode.

This is the Arch of Constantine. The Colosseum is behind it to the right.

Enter the Arch of Constantine, turn left away from the Colosseum up a broad, steep road called the Via Sacra and you reach this arch, the Arch of Titus. It was built by the emperor Domitian to celebrate the victoires of Titus, his brother, over the Judaeans.

It features Roman soldiers carrying off booty such as a menorah.

The Roman ruins as seen from the Arch of Titus.

Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, part of the Roman Forums (or pretty close)

At the far end of the ruins is the Arch of Septimius Severus, built AD 203.

Temple of Castor and Pollux, 496 BC.

Temple of Saturn, to the right of the Arch of Septimius Severus as we approached from the Via Sacra.

Entrance to the Canadian National Exhibition. Just kidding. This is another view of the Temple of Saturn.
