Managing the Side Effects of Chemotherapy Continued

 

Numbness and Tingling

This is a side effect of some chemotherapy drugs including: Cisplatin,Vinblastine,Vincristine,Navelbine,Taxel and Taxotere.

You may notice numbness or tingling befinning in the tips of your fingers or toes and accumulating with each treatment. You may also notice a tightness in your haw and sometimes leg cramps.

If you notice nubness or tingling,or tightness in your haw or leg cramps,notify your primary nurse or physician on your next visit. Take care not to injure yourself with heat,sharp instruments or by striking your fingers or toes.

Once the drugs are discontinured or you complete treatment,the numbness or tingling generally lessens over time,but may be permanent.

Sexuality

Chemotherapy may cause changes to your hormonal and reproductive system.

With chemotherapy,men may have decreased sperm count. For some men,sperm banking may be appropriate prior to commencing treatments. If unsure,speak to your physician.

Some women may be put into premature menopause with chemotherapy,experiencing hot flashes,mood swings,dry skin,vaginal dryness. If these side effects occure,*PLEASE* discuss them with your primary nurse. This may or may not be reversed.

Birth control is *Very Important* for both men and women. Pregnancy must be avoided while on treatment.

Some people experience a loss of sexual desire due to stress or chemical changes in your body caused by chemotherapy.The chemotherapy does not stop your caring. This is a time for holding,supporting and hugs.

Sore Mouth

A sore mouth and throat may be caused by certain chemotherapy drugs.

To prevent mouth sores:

  1. Read and Study the mouth care pamphlet you will have recieved

  2. Keep your mouth clean

  3. If you have dentures,be sure they fit well and do not rub your gums.

  4. Use a soft toothbrush,gel toothpaste and floss.Best thing to use is baking soda and water.

  5. DO NOT USE COMMERCIAL MOUTHWASHES!!

  6. Some foods may irritate your gums. If a specific food hurts your mouth,don't eat it.If you would like assistance with food choices,ask a dietition.

  7. Avoid tobacco and liquer

If your mouth is sore,examine your mouth,tongue and gums for ulcerations,red patches or white patches. If you have any of these symptoms,call your primary nurse.
