Chapter 9

Grumbling curses to herself, Litt rolled out of bed to turn off the alarm. "6:30 already?" she mumbled as she stumbled over to the closet. She grabbed some clothes and went to the shower.

It was already Monday morning, and she had to go back to school. It had been about two weeks since she had stepped into a school, and knowing that she was the "new kid" made her miss all her friends even more. Especially Amber. She had only talked to her on the phone once since she had gotten there, but even then she had been allowed only fifteen minutes. Amber had been her confident, and with everything that was going on, she felt like she was about to burst if she kept everything inside much longer.

The past week had been quite a ride for her. She had gotten to know Tracy pretty well, and although Litt wasn't a very religious person, she had gone to church with the whole family Wednesday night. They had introduced her to everyone, and they all were very nice towards her. Jonathan was in a youth group, and Tess was in the choir. While Tracy and Bill went off and did their own thing, Litt ended up tagging along with Tess. She got to know all the other kids, and by the end of the night, they had all seen a side of her she had thought was long gone. On Saturday, she went with Tess and some of her friends to the mall and had a blast. Sunday was spent at church once more, and she hung out with all her new friends. There was one guy who hadn't been there Wednesday who had caught her eye. He was joking around the whole time, and seemed to be everyone's favorite. Unfortunately, she had never been properly introduced.

Litt dried herself off and got dressed as she mulled over everything that had happened in the past week, and how much her life had changed. It seemed unreal, but even though her whole life had been turned inside out, she had no regrets. Though she had received serious pain as a consequence, Litt was so glad she had retaliated against her father. If she hadn't, nothing would have changed. She would still be running from her father, dodging Mike, and getting fixed up by Mr. Thomson.

Yawning, she strolled into the kitchen, in a fairly good piece of mind. "Hey Tracy," she greeted her as she placed a plate of food in front of her. she still didn't feel comfortable calling her "mom", and she didn't know if she ever would.

"Well, your in a good mood this morning," she commented cheerfully. "If anything, I figured you'd dread having to go back to school."

"Yeah, well, so far I'm ok. It could change though," she chuckled. "School is school."

She ate quickly, grabbed her bag, and managed to make it to the bus stop right as the bus came to a stop. Tess was already there, and shook her head, "Man, I was afraid you weren't gonna make it!"

"Gee, thanks for waiting for me," Litt spoke sarcastically.

"I didn't wanna miss the bus. The we would of had to walk, and it's a LONG walk."

Litt shrugged. "Back in Phoenix, I used to have to take the city bus, and if you missed that THAT, then you stayed home, man!"

Tess raised an eyebrow. "And why, may I ask, did you take the city bus?"

Sitting down she replied quietly, "The school I went to was far away."

For the rest of the ride, Tess talked to her other friends and left Litt to stare out the window. Hearing everyone laughing and talking with their friends made her realize that today was going to be a LONG day. They all soon filed off the bus, and Litt wrenched her schedule out of her pocket. She frowned at it and looked around. Shit, she thought. The last thing I need is to be late for class.

"A bit lost?" came a voice behind her.

She whirled around, surprised, and found herself looking at the guy from church. The only one she didn't know. He flashed her a friendly smile, and she loosened up. "Yeah, you mind helping me out?"

"Of course not," he took her schedule. "I'm Brian, by the way."
