Chapter 15

It was Saturday afternoon, and Litt had just woken up from the most wonderful dream, and the feeling from it hadn't faded yet. It was one she hadn't felt in a long time. Warm. Fuzzy. Happy. Love. It had been dream about Brian.

She got out of bed, trying to cling to the feeling in her heart. She didn't want her old emotions coming back because suddenly she felt another emotion that she had not felt in what seemed forever. It was hope.

Litt picked up some clothes from the floor and quickly put them on. There was something she had to do before she left. She had to say goodbye to Brian.

She grabbed a scrunchie to put her hair up with, and then made her way downstairs. Glancing into the kitchen, she decided against eating anything; she wanted to get this over with first. Tracy and Tess were in the kitchen, eating breakfast. Bill, Mike, and Jonathan were still sleeping. Tracy saw her and asked timidly, "You ready for breakfast?"

She shook her head. "No, I've got to do something first."

"Where are you going?" Tess called after her as she walked towards the door.

"I'm going to Brian's," she replied over her shoulder.

It took her fifteen minutes to walk to his house, and she had thought about what she was going to tell him on the way there. Without hesitating, she walked up the driveway and knocked on the door.

Luck was seemingly on her side, because he was the one to open the door. He was extremely surprised to see her there, and his speechlessness gave her a chance to talk.

"Hi, Bri," she said, standing uncomfortably on the porch. "Um, I have to tell you something, so don't interrupt me, ok?"

He simply nodded.

She took a deep breath. "Well, first of all, I'm leaving today, and I doubt I'll ever see you again, so I wanted to say goodbye. Since you've put up with me so much, I figured I owe you an explanation." Brian tried to object, but she shook her head at him. "No, let me finish. The whole reason I'm here is because I had an abusive home life. Only one person knew about it, and that's Amber. She was my best friend, and I always told her everything. But when a major blow to the head landed me in the hospital, Mike found out. He's a cop for the Phoenix Police Department, and he's been dealing with me for who knows how long. I used to use drugs, I used to steal, I used to get into fights. All that got me into a corrections facility, but that didn't help me. When I was sent here, I figured that might help. You know, a new environment, new people. I thought it'd be good for me. But not wanting to tell anybody around here about my past left a lot of holes in conversations, and it was really hard for me. Since I couldn't talk to Amber, I kept everything inside, and look where that got me. Those guys I got into a fight with yesterday were bullies from back in Phoenix...we used to get into fights all the time. But let me tell you, they sure caught me off guard by showing up like that! Now," she looked down at her hands. Letting all of this stuff out was bringing tears to her eyes, and she had no idea how Brian would react to all this. "I'm sorry that I didn't tell you before, but I couldn't. I understand completely if you never want to talk to me again...Now I have to go," Litt spoke quickly, and began to walk away. Please call me back, please call me back! she pleaded.

Brian was completely taken off guard by all that she had just told him, and he had never expected to hear all that. He wanted to call out, to tell her that it was ok, but at the moment he couldn't form words. All he could do was watch her walk down the street, and out of his life.

As Litt walked down the sidewalk, tears ran down her cheeks and she let out a sob. Such is life, she thought sulkily. Wiping the tears off her face, she looked straight ahead. Maybe I'll see him later on in life, she tried to reassure herself. Maybe things don't have to end like this. But then she forced him from her mind and began to think about everything she'd have to go through in the next year. She'd have to prove herself to everyone. Prove that she was going to be alright. She didn't want to hurt anymore.
