Chapter 11

"So how was school?" Tracy asked as the two girls walked in.

"Good," came the quick reply from Tess as she went up the stairs to her room. She seemed to spend a lot of time up there.

"Tiring," Litt muttered, setting her stuff down with a thud.

"Why's that?"

"Too much work!" she complained, walking into the kitchen.

"Well, how about a snack before you start your homework?"

"Naw, I think I'll pass on that one. I'm gonna go for a walk." She stood up.

Tracy sighed. "Alright, but don't be too long, ok?"

"Yeah," she replied absentmindedly, walking towards the front door. There was a lot she wanted to talk about, and no one to talk about it with.

Litt walked idly down the street, not really caring where she was going. She was too lost in thought, and when she finally became aware of her surroundings, she was standing near a park. There was a basketball court, and two guys were playing. She recognized the shorter, light haired one to be Brian, but the other was taller and had dark hair; she had no idea who he was.

Deciding she had nothing better to do, she began to advance towards them. Brian noticed her as she stumbled towards them, and grinned at her. "Hey Litt! Long time no see!" he joked, calling over to her.

His companion held the ball and examined her with his eyes. "Bri, is this the girl you were talking about?"

Brian nodded. "What are you doing over here, Hop Along?" he asked as she walked up to them.

She grinned sheepishly. "Actually, I don't really know. I just went for a walk, and found myself here," she shrugged and glanced around.

"Well, this is my cousin, Kevin. He's visiting for awhile," Brian gestured to the taller guy.

Looking at them both, she could see the resemblances: like in their jaw and nose, although otherwise you couldn't really tell. Damn, she thought. They sure got the good looking genes in the family... "You guys mind if I watch for a bit?"

"Not at all," Kevin replied.

Brian glanced at her and looked down at her knee. "Don't you wish YOU could play!" he taunted.

She rolled her eyes and walked over to the fence. "Hey, I could play if I wanted to, but for the sake of future healthiness, I choose not to."

Kevin laughed. "Well said." Litt watched the two guys play for about a half an hour, until Kevin excused himself and left. Brian dribbled the ball over to her and leaned against the fence as well. Wiping the sweat off his brow he commented, "Boy, that was fun."

"Don't rub it in," she muttered.

He grinned. "Were you taking notes?"

She shook her head and chuckled. "Why? I already know I can kick your ass!"

"You can not!" he shot back, laughing.

She pushed herself into a standing position and began to walk onto the court. Turning to him she replied, "I can, and when I heal up some more, I will."

Brian laughed at the tone of her voice, then changed the subject. "Well, I'm thirsty. Do you want to come back to my house? You could meet my parents!" he feigned excitement.

Litt laughed at the expression on his face and nodded. "Sounds good to me."

As they began walking, she frowned. "But I need to call my mo--Tracy. I need to call Tracy when we get there." She sighed uncomfortably and looked straight ahead. God, what a stupid mistake, she rebuked herself.

He looked at her when she said this, and again, all the questions he had had before came flooding back to the tip of his tongue, yet he kept silent. Man, he thought. She seems to have a LOT of stuff hidden...I wish I could find out what she's all about.

After a minute of silence, he asked quietly, "Do you talk to ANYbody?" She raised an eyebrow and looked at him as if she didn't know what he was talking about.

"Litt, don't look at me like that, you know what I mean. There seems to be a lot of stuff in there," he patted her head, "that you don't like talking about."

She nodded slowly and walked faster. Damn, she thought darkly. He's the last person I want to tell! He'll probably never want to speak to me again... "True, very true," she replied stubbornly.

Brian sighed frustratedly and matched her pace. Shaking his head he responded, "You're one tough cookie."
