Your arm trembles as you hold the lantern, but you are determined to accomplish what you set out to do. You stand firm, and call out in a high, squeaky voice "Who are you?"

The ghost comes to a stop a few yards away from you. He stares, as though he can see through you as well as you can see through him. Then he says. "Have you come to put me back?"

You take a deep breath, and in a far more normal voice, ask "are you the spirit who has been haunting this inn and throwing things around?"

He glares at you. "Yes, I have! My corpse has been violated, and I want to be buried properly, or at least returned here!

"What do you mean?" you ask, bewildered.

With a sigh, the ghost settles and sits on the floor. "I was an adventurer, and I came to Gerriton hoping to find other adventurers. I thought we could band together and go and make our fortune. I discovered that it wasn't as easy as it sounded. I got a few jobs here and there, acting as a bodyguard for someone, or seeing merchants' shipments through dangerous areas. It was generally enough for me to live on, as long as I was careful. I had to supplement my food sometimes by hunting and gathering in the forest. "One day, when I was particularly down on my luck, I heard a rumour that there was a huge pirate treasure stashed beneath the Swan Inn. Back in the old days, the smugglers had hidden it there just before the king's guards had caught most of them. They were executed, and the treasure lay forgotten for many years. Rumour had it that it was cursed, but I was young and brave and self-confident, thinking that I was indestructible and could do anything. I searched for several weeks along the bank of the river, looking for the entrance to the tunnel we're in now. I took along my fishing rod and pretended I was fishing if I saw anyone. Finally, I found the entrance. I marked it, and waited until night came. I came back with my lantern and sword. I had to force the door, but it wasn't very difficult because it was old and starting to rot from the dampness of the river.

"Once inside, it didn't take me long to find this passageway on the left of the main one. The treasure was there, just behind me." The ghost turns and points behind him. "I could see it, in an open chest; gold and jewels glittering in the light from my lantern. I ran into the hallway, and I had just reached the chest when I was hit by a fire bolt. Someone must have set a trigger in the doorway. It knocked me into the chest, and the lid slammed down on top of me. I was burned to death by the firebolt. My body lay there for a long time, peacefully. I wanted to be buried properly, so I could rest, but I didn't mind being here too much. Sometimes I'd drift upstairs and watch people eating dinner; there are plenty of interesting guests here. Then, just a little while ago, this scruffy stranger comes down here and takes the chest my bones are in, and removes it. It's stuck in a dirty old pig barn!" The ghost jumps to his feet, his voice rising in anger. "Imagine that, if your bones were moved and stuck in a stinky old barn, with pigs rooting around and making those disgusting noises day in and day out! There's no dignity in that!"

You nod your head in fervent agreement, hoping that the ghost isn't going to turn on you in his anger.

He stops and looks at you again, studying your face. "So, you see, you've got to go get it, and give me a decent burial. It could have just as easily have been you that died down here."

You agree to go and find the body and have it buried properly. The ghost eagerly gives you directions as to where you can find the treasure chest.

"It's going to be too big for you to carry by yourself" he warns you.

You decide to tell Nereia about the treasure

You decide to tell Kershaw about the treasure

You decide to tell Tony, the handsome waiter, about the treasure

You decide to keep the treasure to yourself, and just carry everything out in several loads, instead of trying to take it all at once.
