History of Dark Deception

Dark Deception started with just 3 friends who never knew of each other's abilities to play instruments. It started with Jon, Vince, & Tom. Tom used to play guitar back in 3rd and 4th grade, but put it down only to move on to other hobbies. Well one day in October 2001 Vince came over and Tom picked it back realizing that he was good at it. He continued to play and play. Vince had played bass before on his cousins bass and told Tom. Tom said "get a bass, lets start a band" Vince agreed.
Tom then went over his friend's house, Jon, up in Cherry Hill. Jon was a drummer. Tom always knew this but never really thought anything of it. Tom heard Jon and was like "Lets start a band!" So they did. Jon, Tom, and Vince went under the name of Top Of Authority for the first few weeks.
"It was really funny how we all seemed to work together at the time.  In all reality we were just a bunch of kids playing our instruments and learning together, we were good, but still kids none the less, we had no idea of the road that would lie ahead of us." Tom

"We were not a third as good as we are now" says Tom, "Now I'm learning to solo and we are are learning more as a band about music in general.  We aren't just down tuning the guitar and bass, freaking out on drums, &  see what comes out. We are past that level now."
The band's name changed from Top Of Authority to Dark Perception. One night Kevin, good friend of the band, and Tom were desperate to find a new name for the band.
Kevin helped us out a lot. We went through thesauruses and dictionaries desperate for a new name. Tom had come up Dark Perception. Then Kevin told Tom of a local band called Altered Perception. So the next day Tom came up with Dark Deception. "I didn't know where I heard it before but I know I did. Then it hit me."

The band carried on for 8 more months. Tom and Vince getting together a lot playing and writing more and more. Jon and Tom only got together 3 times and played one "gig" over the course of 8 months.  Desperate to get together Jon, Tom, & Vince kept trying and kept trying.
Kept failing, and kept failing.

In need to start back up the band, Vince and Tom felt they had to kick out Jon. They called on Kevin as the new drummer. "It was hard to get rid of Jon. We have been friends for a very long time. It took me like 2 months to finally tell him. But it needed to be done. He lives about 40 minutes away." Tom
"Jon is really good. But he had to go" says Vince
The band carried on. Practicing, writing, and expanding their horizons. They had fun, made music, listened to music, hung out, shared stories, and basically had fun.
Kevin quit the band on March 21 and joined back up only weeks after.  Only later on June 15th would it be decided that Kevin needed to go.
"We had given him so many chances, time and time again.  One day he told me he never wanted to play with us again, so I told him he would have to go right then and there." Vince
"The worst feeling in the world is having to kick out a band member, and a great friend.  I had to do it once before and was not happy with the idea.  So thats why I was relieved when Vince did it.  Kevin was one of the best, still is.  He is a great friend, and good band member, but it always seemed like we were thinking of what would become without really working for it.  It was really our parents who stopped this band from going... and nobody else but them.  But I do not feel any animosity towards them, it was just bad scheduling.  I just wish for Kevin to continue to be a friend, there are two types of friends in this world, band members, and friends.  And both, well that just equals a big family."

Matt and Tom had been jamming for a while.  They had gotten together a few times and just jammed and always had something, but each were always doing something with another band.  So then Matt Bricker joined.

"Tom & I invited him into a chatroom, and I mainly did the talking.  I said 'Matt, want to join.  Well then welcome to the family.'"
"I always knew in my mind that eventually I would do a gig or something with Matt Bricker, when we played together there was chemistry in the music, it sounded good, and the Magners always told me it did."

"When we played there was chemistry in the music, that one riff with the double bass and the fast speedish riff, I liked that a lot." Matt

Matt

We write great songs and take time to learn about life and music. The thing about us is that we feel we can please anything mainstream, we can cover so many styles and ways of playing, but this is the style we have chosen, and we have the freedom to change that at any given moment and experiment. That is what makes us feel unique.
Are you ready?  We will prevail, in the end, the strongest survive.
