Dear Congressman,

This letter is to inform you that I support
opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to
oil and natural gas exploration.

There is a need to diversify our domestic oil supply. Production is on the decline in many of our oil fields at home, and expanding production is the best way, and the first step, in combating high prices and improving national security.

The most prominent opposition to drilling in ANWR is a concern for the environment and the wildlife it contains.  I urge you to consider the example of the Prudhoe Bay oil field, just 65 miles west of ANWR.  There has been no negative impact on the environment since drilling began in the early 1970s.  In fact, our technology has improved so much since then that construction in ANWR would be 64% smaller than Prudhoe Bay, and our environmental regulations are now much more vigorous.

There is no evidence to suggest that the wildlife in the area would be harmed.  In fact, the caribou population in the current North Slope oil fields has increased from 3,000 to 32,000.  The grizzly population has increased 15% as well.

In addition, only 1.5 million acres of ANWR's 19 million acres would be opened to exploration.  The remaining 17.5 million acres would remain permanentally closed.  Of the 1.5 million acres, only 2,000 acres would actually be affected.

Please contemplate the benefits of drilling on ANWR's coastal plain, and allow your votes on legislation concerning ANWR to reflect your thoughfullness.
