October TRL!

October was dominated by boy bands, especially Backstreet Boys, who took the number one spot everyday of the month, except for one (when it unfortunately went to ‘N Sync). The higher numbered videos (#s 7, 8, 9, 10) changed pretty much everyday, which was always interesting. MANY world premiere videos were shown and lots of people visited. It was a pretty full month. Near the end, Limp Bizkit’s second video, "N 2 Gether Now," began to take over "Rearranged"’s spot. Also, we saw the disturbing trend of Carson disappearing more and more often. Here’s the month:

October 1, 1999 Friday
10. "The Chemicals Between Us" by Bush
9. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - I am starting to like this song a lot, but that’s not surprising considering my Mariah history. Her CD Music Box was the first CD I ever owned. I could listen to all of the songs on it (which is not the case with all of my CDs, not by a long shot) and I did, often. History repeating itself in effect, people!
8. "I Do (Cherish You)" by 98 Degrees - It’s almost gone.
7. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock - This is just always here. It’s unfailing. But, unlike other videos, it doesn’t get the same attention.
6. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - Carson’s favorite part: the "Travis, I’m pregnant" sign.
5. "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera - I don’t have to worry anymore… (see Notes)
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
3. "Music of My Heart" by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan - I get an adrenalin rush every time I see that they aren’t even #2!
2. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys
Notes:
- Family Values Tour scavenger hunt
- Announced: Christina Aguilera’s 61st day. How exciting. Finally.
- World premiere Fiona Apple video

October 4, 1999 Monday
10. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey
9. "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega - This song had the possibility of being a great video, but all I’m seeing is a bunch of scantily clad women all over the place. It could have been so good.
8. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock - My absolute favorite line: "I once was lost, but now I’m just blind."
7. "I Do (Cherish You)" by 98 Degrees - Goodbye. (Jeff is still hot.)
6. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - Listen to the background vocals of this song, especially the part about going to "the show." Even without the images, the song is funny!
5. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
4. "Music of My Heart" by ‘N Sync and Gloria Estefan - Just found out that the song was recorded in two places, ‘N Sync at one and Gloria at the other. The first time that the two met was at the video shoot. And the song is supposed to have so much emotional backing? Yeah right, give me a break. Emotional song where the artists did not even know each other.
3. "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera
2. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit - I just found out a few days ago that the substance in which they are drowning is milk. Um, what the heck? That’s a little shifty.
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - It’s really funny to see how bad Nick looks in this video. His hair? So bad.
Notes:
- Christina Aguilera guest hosts. I’m seeing too much of Christina these days (at least her video is almost gone). Where is Carson? Do I have to change the caption on the picture up there to "The Sometimes Host"? And of course, with Christina, there’s "so" much stuff going on again. That’s so great.
- 98 Degrees’ video retired (65th day). It’s gone. Finally.

October 5, 1999 Tuesday
10. "She’s Got Issues" by the Offspring - Um, no.
9. "The Chemicals Between Us" by Bush - Warming up to the song. Actually starting to like it.
8. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock
7. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey
6. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182
5. "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera
4. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit
3. "Music of My Heart" by ‘N Sync and Gloria Estefan - They’re coming tomorrow! A very good practice for writing commentary. I’m so excited!
2. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears - I love the dance move after she says, "Tell me, I’m so into you…" It is so cool!
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys
Notes:
- Carson is back! And maybe we could stay this time?
- Molly Shannon visits

October 6, 1999 Wednesday
10. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock - Still manages to hang on.
9. "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega - I don’t understand this…
8. "Come Original" by 311 - You don’t know how completely surprised I was to see this on the countdown.
7. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey
6. "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera - Retires tomorrow!
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - I got tickets to see them in concert November 2nd!
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears - Did you see how much Justin was checking out this video?? This is what I expected to see as a request: "I am requesting Britney cause I know Justin will want to see it when he’s there."
3. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit - Apparently ‘N Sync are major Limp fans. They "requested" the song and did a mockery of the process by ending with "Fred Durst is SO hot." It was actually really funny.
2. "Music of My Heart" by ‘N Sync and Gloria Estefan - When asked why they were number two, Justin thought maybe it was because it was a slow song. Um, no, I think it’s pretty much because the song sucks. A lot.
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - Still managed to beat today’s popular guests.
Notes:
- 311 debuts
- Brandy visits. She was asked the ultimate question: Do you like any of the boy bands? Her response is "well, I like ‘N Sync, but my absolute favorite is the Backstreet Boys." That’s right. That’s what I thought.
- ‘N Sync and Gloria Estefan visit. Boy do I have a lot of stuff to say today. If you care about 'N Sync or about the comments I have, click here! (Also see song commentary above.)
- World premiere Ricky Martin video. Why did he pick this song? It really isn’t that good. I have the CD, and he definitely could have picked something else. I mean seriously.

October 7, 1999 Thursday
10. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock
9. "Come Original" by 311 - I’m still surprised.
8. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - They played this remix with Missy Elliott, DaBrat, and Snoop, but it pretty much sucked. The other version was at least entertaining.
7. "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera - Watching this video for the last time on TRL, I was surprisingly sad. I will seriously miss this song, which sounds weird considering the commentary I’ve been directing towards it.
6. "U Don’t Know Me (Like U Used To)" by Brandy - Yeah, that’s cause you changed your sound.
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - Why don’t they play the whole video? Cause it’s only like 2 ½ minutes long.
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears - This song is really good. I love the dancing and her shirt. I don’t understand why people bother to make anti sites about her; you know those people really do like her at some level, or else they wouldn’t be spending so much time on her. Think about it.
3. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit
2. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - No words. Speechless. Saddened.
1. "Music of My Heart" by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan - I guess this is #1 only because people had a chance to witness them (and their stupidity) yesterday. At first I was mad, but then I realized that they’re not worth it.
Notes:
- Christina Aguilera’s video retired (65th day)
- Brandy debuts
- Ice Cube visits
- World premiere Foo Fighters video. This is a strange one, folks.
- Counting Crows visit; world premiere video

October 8, 1999 Friday
10. "Shake Your Bon Bon" by Ricky Martin - Not approving.
9. "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega - Not approving.
8. "Come Original" by 311
7. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock
6. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - Carson, NO WE DO NOT LIKE THE REMIX. Please stop playing this, please.
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - Going to a concert! (November 2nd).
4. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit
3. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
2. "Music of My Heart" by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan - Looks like it can’t hang on. Aww, too bad.
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - Going to a concert! (October 12th).
Notes:
- Ricky Martin debuts
- Savage Garden visits; world premiere video

October 11, 1999 Monday
10. "We’re in this Together" by Nine Inch Nails
9. "Role Model" by Eminem - This was a surprise, but, if you’ll notice, it was on my TRL Obscure Video Poll!
8. "Waiting for Tonight" by Jennifer Lopez - This remix is really bad. I don’t understand why it’s played.
7. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock - There is no longer any thrill attached to seeing this video. It’s worn out.
6. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - They played the regular video, finally! Remixes are bad! (see #8)
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
3. "Music of My Heart" by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan - My grandma says if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.
2. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit - Lyric of the day: "You may believe that nothing is wrong until you’re crying."
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - Concert is tomorrow! I am so excited!
Notes:
- Eminem debuts
- Jerry O’Connell visits. He is one funny guy in the Mariah video!
- David Boreanaz visits. A little shyer than Jerry is. Just a little bit.
- World premiere Dr. Dre video. This kind of music is no longer popular. The early ‘90s are gone. Get a clue.
- First finalist for the notebook design contest shown

October 12, 1999 Tuesday
I am so sorry that I’ve been backed up for the past few days, but it was merely because today I went to the Backstreet Boys concert! (And it was so good! See my review.)
10. "Come Original" by 311
9. "U Don't Know Me (Like U Used To)" by Brandy
8. "Waiting for Tonight" by Jennifer Lopez
7. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey
6. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
3. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit
2. "Music of My Heart" by ‘N Sync and Gloria Estefan
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - Number one on the day I go to their concert!
Notes:
- Chris Kattan visits. He’s an odd one…
- TLC visits (minus Left Eye)

October 13, 1999 Wednesday
10. "Role Model" by Eminem
9. "Unpretty" by TLC
8. "Come Original" by 311 - This video is really interesting to watch.
7. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock - Again, this video is just there. It’s so weird: it never gets any news or interesting introductions or anything. ???
6. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - We already have this video, so I’m wondering why they world premiered another? TRL last year forced videos from BSB and ‘N Sync to retire when they made new videos. Yeah, let’s be consistent, people.
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
3. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit
2. "Music of My Heart" by ‘N Sync and Gloria Estefan - If you look closely at Lance (I know, difficult…), you’ll notice that it looks like he doesn’t really know the words. It’s hilarious.
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - Aaaah! I went to their concert! They sang this first! It was so good! Kevin=hot, Brian=adorable!
Notes:
- Dave Chappelle visits. Who?
- Puff Daddy visits
- Robbie Williams visits; world premiere video

October 14, 1999 Thursday
10. "U Don't Know Me (Like U Used To)" by Brandy - The abbreviations of the super-long word "you" are questionable.
9. "Unpretty" by TLC - I thought we got rid of this!
8. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock
7. "Satisfy You" by Puff Daddy featuring R. Kelly
6. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - PLEASE STOP PLAYING THE AWFUL REMIX. IT IS NOT GOOD!
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - 98 Degrees feels that this video is a form of flattery for them. Carson calls Blink a "closet boy band." ::sigh:: People are so misled.
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
3. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit - (It was "formally" announced that this video is not a continuation of "Nookie," but I think that’s a cool concept, so I’m in denial.) Don’t you just love how they connected it to their last video?
2. "Music of My Heart" by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan - NEWS: Are being sued for $150 million for breach of contract (because they joined BSB’s label). Hmmm…
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys
Notes:
- Puff Daddy debuts
- 98 Degrees visits. All wearing black (leather) jackets. A little excessive. However, Jeff is really hot.
- Joe visits
- Mariah Carey phones
- World premiere Mariah Carey video featuring 98 Degrees and Joe

October 15, 1999 Friday
10. "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega - Notice how he puts his hands about chest level, moves them around, and calls that dancing?
9. "Role Model" by Eminem
8. "U Don't Know Me (Like U Used To)" by Brandy - Notice how the black bugs have nothing to do with the song?
7. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock
6. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - I was really starting to like this song, that is, until they started playing the awful remix.
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - "My little windmill" is the last line. Cracks me up.
4. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit -
3. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears - I’m going to start showing pictures of some of the videos (if I can find them) so here’s the first edition:

2. "Music of My Heart" by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan - Lance seriously does not know the words! Just watch him.
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - Want to see pictures? See my video review.
Notes:
- Shot Out Friday. Serena gives a shot out to Phoenix!
- Leonardo DiCaprio video from 1995

October 18, 1999 Monday
10. "Satisfy You" by Puff Daddy
9. "Unpretty" by TLC
8. "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega
7. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock
6. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - I know that they are still playing the crap remix, but I am still in denial. So here’s some pictures of the old, better video:

5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182
4. "Rearranged" by Limp Bizkit
3. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
2. "Music of My Heart" by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys
Notes:
- Lou Bega visits
- Matthew Perry visits
- World premiere Limp Bizkit video. I don’t get it, TRL. I mean, please be consistent. With this new video, will they now allow two videos of the same artist to be on the countdown simultaneously? Never before has this been done. Consistency is the key, and they are FAILING. Good video, though.
- TRL Notebook contest winner announced:
The Winner Created by Brian from North Carolina

October 19, 1999 Tuesday
10. "Satisfy You" by Puff Daddy
9. "Unpretty" by TLC - They could have made a much better video for this song.
8. "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega - When Lou is singing the directions, like, "clap your hands once" etc., the girl isn’t even following them. She’s just bouncing around. Way confusing.
7. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - In the little staged cat fight, all Mariah and evil Mariah do is slap each other on the legs. WTF?
6. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - I figured out why they didn’t parody ‘N Sync that much in this video: because ‘N Sync isn’t exactly as important to copy. They aren’t even worth copying.
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
3. "Rearranged" / "N 2 Gether Now" by Limp Bizkit - I really do not understand why they are doing this. Both videos in the same slot? That’s a strange, and inconsistent. How are they counting the votes? I’ll have to find out.
2. "Music of My Heart" by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - Carson comments, "BSB is at number one, again, … which is awesome." I think he’s stretching the truth a little there. I'm sure he doesn't think it's all that awesome.
Notes:
- Bif Naked visits
- Marc Anthony visits
- Limp Bizkit debuts, sort of. See song commentary.
- World premiere Stone Temple Pilots video

October 20, 1999 Wednesday
10. "Come Original" by 311 - Been gone, but now it’s back!
9. "Satisfy You" by Puff Daddy
8. "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega
7. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock - TRL has formally established a contest between this video and Mariah’s. Why are they forcing conflict?
6. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - Snoop Dogg’s birthday today; Carson announces that he’s got "a .40 in the mail for you with a bow on it."
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - Been at #5 for 11 straight days.
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
3. "Rearranged" / "N 2 Gether Now" by Limp Bizkit - The new video cracks me up. Fred’s and Method Man’s argument over the playstation is hilarious.
2. "Music of My Heart" by ‘N Sync and Gloria Estefan
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - A funny parody video of some random guys singing "I Want it that Way" in double time aired. (Absolutely laughter-provoking!)
Notes:
- TRL Premiere Garbage video

October 21, 1999 Thursday
10. "Waiting for Tonight" by Jennifer Lopez
9. "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega
8. "Unpretty" by TLC
7. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock - Lyric of the day: "I once was lost… but now I’m just blind."
6. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - I actually enjoy listening to Missy Elliott’s singing part, even if it’s not part of the original song.
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - At the end of the video, it’s amazing how much Travis really does look like AJ, especially with the hat on.
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears
3. "Rearranged" / "N 2 Gether Now" by Limp Bizkit
2. "Music of My Heart" by ‘N Sync and Gloria Estefan - The top five is always the same.
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys - Everyday Carson mentions how BSB are always #1 everyday. I’m sure the boys appreciate his frustration.
Notes:
- Taye Diggs visits
- World premiere Marilyn Manson video. In Claymation!

October 22, 1999 Friday
10. "Unpretty" by TLC
9. "Satisfy You" by Puff Daddy
8. "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega
7. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock - Carson is still building up that conflict with Mariah’s video. Craziness.
6. "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey - Wondering about the relevancy of the roller skates?
5. "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 - At the newly-proclaimed "Blink Spot!"
4. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears - Carson ends the video by proclaiming how many times he’s seen each of her three videos. How funny.
3. "Rearranged" / "N 2 Gether Now" by Limp Bizkit - Because of the new video, we never get to see much of "Rearranged." I guess they are remedying this on Monday: voters for Limp will now choose one of the videos and the highest vote-getter will be played on the countdown.
2. "Music of My Heart" by 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan
1. "Larger Than Life" by Backstreet Boys
Notes:
- Shot Out Friday
- World premiere Will Smith video
- TRL Wannabes: Stone Temple Pilots, "Down"; Kelis, "Caught Out There"; Garbage, "The World is Not Enough"

Go to 2nd half of October - Yes, my commentary makes the results lengthy.
