Leadership in Action - November 1, 2000

Keeping the Commitment
An educational session by Dan Dawson, DTM

Presentation notes by Judy Edmond, ATM-S/CL

To begin his presentation, Dan Dawson, DTM, handed
out The Toastmaster Promise cards, which reminded
us of our commitment to Toastmasters. We all joined Toastmasters for different reasons, but we are all committed to the same set of promises.

“Commitment,” is a key word in Toastmasters and it has several meanings, according to Dan. They are:

True to your word
Dedicated
Staying the course.

“Have you kept your promise to Toastmasters? Or did you lose it along the way?” he asked the audience.

The questions he felt we needed to ask ourselves included:
~ How do we measure our commitment?
~ What is your goal?
~ When will you reach it?
~ How do you measure it?
~ Is it realistic?
~ Can you envision it?
~ What is the time line?
~ Where are you now?
~ When did you stop your commitment?
~ When was your last speech?
~ Does your club suffer from lack of officers?
~ Is every meeting meaningful?
~ Have officers explained their goals?
~ Do you attend at least three meetings a month?

In closing, Dan reminded each of us to help members meet and keep their commitments and remain committed ourselves.

Daniel Dawson is President of Tucson Toastmasters, a closed club at Texas Instruments. The club
currently has 24 members and is growing. Dan has been in Toastmasters since 1984 and is an Information Analyst, Sr., AAP Division of Texas Instruments in Tucson, AZ.
