The Races of the Throneworld

Humans

The humans who woke up on the largest of the nameless continents one day were common enough, selected at random and wiped clean of memories. They eventually divided themselves into three types out of confusion: the dark-skinned folk, the blondes, and the others. The blondes moved south, clustering into strongholds that they called Lieres. The dark-skinned folk claimed a mountainous area that came to be the kingdom of Malachia. Finally, the others took the eastern area that bordered the forests, and called it Cartura.

The humans of the Throneworld can not use elemental magics, and can only gain power through certain beings that claim to be deities.

Elves

The elves of the Throneworld are not quite typical. First of all, they share a common consciousness, a mental bond that connects all of their kind. Through this, they can pool all the knowledge that each elf discovers into a vast body of impersonal lore and secrets. This mental bond extends into a spiritual bond, for every now and then two elves will experience a kind of fusing of identities; for a moment, two separate people become one, and know not only facts but thoughts and emotions. This soulbond only exists for one instant, but the elves involved are inextricably tied together for the rest of their lives. The common consciousness itself can be ignored or tuned into at will; also, an elf can choose to cut him or herself off from it completely, but that choice is irrevocable.

Elves are distinguished from humans by slightly more refined facial features, pointed ears, slender bodies, and hair/eye color in the range from red, through purple and blue, to green. They are the most proficient in the magical arts of fire and air, and half-elves are the only beings gifted with the ability to heal; the closer to balanced, the more powerful the healer.

Ogres

The ogres of the Throneworld may seem dim on the surface; they don't speak much, and their words come slowly and carefully when they do. They are much craftier than the humans and elves give them credit for; they hold the elemental powers of earth and water, and their half-blooded children can command the souls of the dead. However, they are careful with these powers, for while they are all born with terrible tempers, each and every ogre possesses empathy. While the elven race looks inward, the ogres look outward. Ogres can form a limited sort of soulbond with another being which, while not quite as strong as the elven bond and not so dramatic, can connect more than just two ogres; it can connect an ogre with two others, or a human. It cannot pierce the common consciousness to connect with an elven mind, but even half-elves are fair game.

Ogres are distinguished from humans by blocky facial features, tusks, stocky bodies and thick hair in distinctly metallic shades. Their eyes are also metallic-colored and reflect like mirrors in the darkness.

Short History

The three sects of humankind were often at war, and were in fact fighting when the elves were introduced. At that, the Three Realms Coalition was swiftly established, and the humans turned their attentions to fighting these new, strange creatures.

Elvenkind managed to gain footholds in the dark, fearful places where humans would not go: the deep forests and the strange, nonhuman ruins that could still be found half-buried in the hills. The ogres were introduced shortly afterward, also trying to take their place on the continent; after much struggle, they took over the western edge of the continent and began working to solidify their little empire.

Time passed, and the three races slowly grew accustomed to each other. Intermarriages occurred no matter how much the rulers tried to stop or punish them; half-elven and half-ogrish sects formed. The humans' Three Realms Coalition, the elves' Council of Kings, and the ogre Emperor formed an alliance finally, and set a few ground rules for interaction between the people. Land Passes and the Border Laws grew out of this, as did the neutral Sister Cities of Daam Corcorial, Rino' Nitela and Vare Visuka. For years, the laws were obeyed between the nations...until now. Mysterious attacks plague the Three Realms, and the elven Kings are suspected. War brews on the borders of the forest, and the ogres withdraw to watch the outcome.
