10th October 2002

Hi! I am sitting here at my desk in my room...yes, those of you who know that I don't own a computer may be confused by this statement, but my wonderful, lovely and just brilliant friend Liz from Kitchener in Ontario has allowed me to borrow her lap top as she has just bought a new one! yay!

Now, I really do have photos on this page but you're going to have to read my bit first..or you could just skip this and look at the photos but I know you all really do want to hear what I'm up to.

For everyone who went and saw the queen when she came to Brisbane and I made the executive decision to stay at home, well, I made up for it! She is in Canada at the moment and came to UBC and so I was late for my lecture but I saw the queen! She is very little, and she was wearing the most outrageous blue hat, but she seemed very friendly, stopping and talking to people. So, there you have it, my brush with royalty.

I finished my essay in the wee hours of Wednesday morning...bad Sarah - but it's handed in now! So I can go away to Victoria (the city on Vancouver Island, not Victoria the state) this weekend feeling non-guilty.

On Monday night I was tucked-in. This may not make much sense right now, but hold on and I shall explain. We have a system here, where a guy from your brother floor does something nice for you, then you do something nice for someone else on your brother floor. So, on Monday night, Soren (from my brother floor, he's from Toronto), took me out for pizza and then we met up with some other pairs out doing tuck-ins and went bowling! It was lots of fun, I got to show off my non-bowling talent, especially for 5-pin bowling with these tiny little bowling balls. All very amusing, but it was lots of fun - I had a lovely evening. I am tucking-in another person from my brother floor next week, but I shan't give away any details in case he finds out - I'm being secretive here!

ICE HOCKEY!
I have finally had a chance to go and watch an ice hockey game, they refer to it as simply "hockey" here of course, as the normal form of hockey is called "field hockey". I went to watch the women's varsity team play (a girl from my floor is on the team, she's very good.) It is extremely fast! and rough! They were slamming each other into the walls of the rink, and pushing each other over..all very exciting, I can understand why this game is so popular here. I also went to see my friend Sarah play rugby on the weekend - I had no idea girls could be so rough! Poor Sarah has several more bruises than she did before!

(last paragraph I promise!) Last Friday night, to make up for the fact that we weren't going anywhere that weekend, we decided to get dressed up and go out for dinner. It was much fun, we went to a place called Boston Pizza, very good, then we were extremely bad and went to Death by Chocolate (my new favourite store) afterwards..we felt so guilty that on Saturday morning Marianne and I went on the mammoth walk down the 363 steps to Wreck Beach and back up again to make up for it!

Okay, finally, as promised, pictures!
