Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh, born on March 22nd 1929 in Penang, was destined to have an illustrious path to follow. Better known as P. Ramlee, the son of a sailor from Aceh, Sumatra, was drawn to music and acting at a very young age.
During the Japanese occupation of World War II, he left school to work and later enrolled in a Japanese military school (Kaigun). It was here that he learned to play the piano, violin and ukulele from a Japanese teacher, Hirake San. He also took the opportunity to learn Japanese songs.
Later, he joined a band and studied music under the renowned music teacher, Kamaruddin. In 1945, P. Ramlee took part in a singing competition sponsored by Radio Penang, where he managed a third. He tried again the following year and achieved second placing. In 1947, he became the champion.
1948 was a watershed. Something happened that changed his life forever...
