18 September,2007. Today marks Day 1 of the 62 General Assembly. Tanzania seems to be working both sides of the fence as its President, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, who comes to New York for the 62 General Assembly, will accept an award for the people of Tanzania at a fundraiser for Africa education on September 19. The following day, he will then in hold a major press conference on September 20 to announce a Leon Sullivan Foundation summit to he held in Arusha in June, 2008.(See photo). Meanwhile, Tanzania's own, Asha Rose Migiro, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General will chair a Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)"working group at the UN this week. (See photo) Both 2006 - THE UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA started 2006 with great expectations. The East African nation entered 2006 with a new Union President and as President of the United Nations Security Council for the month of January. On Friday, January 13, 2006, Tanzania held its first open meeting with reports on the progress in the Sudan. On January 27, Tanzania held a ministerial level meeting on the subject of the Great Lakes Region. Between January 13 and January 27, the council met on many issues including Afghanistan and Cote D'Ivoire.While Tanzania's turn as president of the U.N. Security Council came to a stop at the end of January, Tanzania will serve on council for two years while the mission tackles a myriad of other duties throughout the UN System.
