Students will be using our class homepage links and Microsoft Word to complete this exercise. As you toggle back and forth between both programs, you might find it easier to keep track of where you are on the Internet exercise by highlighting the number that you are on. Instructions are given step by step. If you have any questions, please raise your hand for assistance.
Getting Started...
1. Click on the Microsoft Word icon.
2. Click on the word FILE in the menu bar and select NEW, then BLANK DOCUMENT. (Go to FILE, SAVE AS, then title this document as Font Exercise ONE. Remember to SAVE your file often as you work. Anytime you do something on the computer that you wouldn't feel like repeating, take that moment to SAVE!)
3. Select the FILE in the menu bar, then PAGE SETUP, then click on LANDSCAPE under the heading orientation, then OKAY.
4. Next, type the word unique. (Note: Do not have to capitalize any letters.)
5. Next, highlight the word "unique" by dragging the mouse cursor over it, or double clicking quickly on your name.
Special Features...
6. We need to change the size of the font. Go into the menu bar and type the number 72 into the font size box, then press ENTER.
7. Highlight highlight the word "unique", select FORMAT in the menu bar, then FONT.
8. In the FONT pop-up box, select GARAMOND.
9. At the top of this pop-up box, you will see tabs, select CHARACTER SPACING.
10. In the CHARACTER SPACING menu, there are three categories: SCALE, SPACING and POSITION.
11. In the SCALE box, select 200%.
12. Next, in the SPACING box, select CONDENSED, then type 5 pts., then press ENTER.
Observe…
13. Negative and Positive space relationships between the letters.
14. The captured areas of negative space within and between letters.
Let’s see what you’ve learned…
15. Highlight the letter “n” and change its font size to 144.
16. Next, select the second “u” and change its font size to 24.
17. Next, highlight the “que” and change its CHARACTER SPACING to CONDENSED by 10.
Something new…
18. Highlight the first “u”.
19. In the CHARACTER SPACING box, go to POSITION and select RAISED by 10, then press OKAY.
20. Next, highlight the “un” and in CHARACTER SPACING, go to SPACING and select CONDENSED by 20pts., then press OKAY.
21. Next, highlight the ‘i’ and change it’s font size to 120.
Observe…
22. Negative and Positive space relationships between the letters.
23. The captured areas of negative space within and between letters.
24. The negative space shapes created between letters “un”, “ni” and “que”.
25. The lesser tension between the letters “un” versus the greater tension between “ue”.
Please print your Word document displaying the manipulated word "unique". Write your first and last names onto this paper and turn it in for credit. Click instructions below for printing if necessary.
Getting to Use Word Art...
1. Click on the Microsoft Word icon.
2. Click on the word FILE in the menu bar and select NEW, then BLANK DOCUMENT. (Go to FILE, SAVE AS, then title this document as Font Exercise TWO. Remember to SAVE your file often as you work. Anytime you do something on the computer that you wouldn't feel like repeating, take that moment to SAVE!)
3. Select the FILE in the menu bar, then PAGE SETUP, then click on LANDSCAPE under the heading orientation, then OKAY.
4. Select the WORD ART icon (blue letter “A” slanted towards the right at an angle).
5. Select the box in the upper-most right hand corner, press OK.
6. Type the first letter of your first name only. While here, you can select/change the font style and/or size. Press OK.
7. When you are back to your Word Document, click on the letter so that it may appear in a box with adjustment handles. As soon as you do this, a pop-up tool bar appears, this is your WORD ART TOOLBAR.
8. With the letter selected, press the “dog” surrounded by lines (a.k.a. text wrapping icon) in the WORD ART TOOLBAR, then select BEHIND TEXT.
9. As soon as you selected the BEHIND TEXT option, notice the changes to your letter – the letter should now be displayed with white circles (adjustment tools) and a yellow diamond (distortion tool) and an extended green circle (a rotation tool).
10. The BEHIND TEXT option allows you to move your letter(s) anywhere on the page.
11. Create the other letters in your name, one at a time, following the instructions as described above in #4 - #9.
12. Create a design employing negative/positive space, character spacing, etc. Create your design on a horizontal format (just as the text is displayed on this page, from left to right).
13. After you have created all of the letters of your name following the directions above AND designed them employing creative negative/positive space/shape, character spacing, etc., you will need to group them so that they can be flipped and mirrored…
14. Click on one letter, press and hold the SHIFT key down while selecting the remaining letters. RIGHT CLICK on a letter in that group, then select GROUPING, then GROUP.
15. With the group highlighted, RIGHT CLICK, select COPY, then PASTE (a second group should now appear).
16. You will now need to attempt flipping this image. To do so, you will need your FLIP option:
• Go to TOOLS, CUSTOMIZE, COMMANDS then DRAWING.
• Scroll down until you find the FLIP and ROTATE icons. (You can drag them one at a time onto on of your toolbars.)
17. Next, select/highlight one of your names, then click on your FLIP VERTICAL icon. This will allow your name to become flipped. You will then need to place it below your right-side up name to create a mirrored image.
18. If you have any questions, please ask! Manipulate your lettering to play around with negative and positivie shape and space. And most importantly, have fun!
