I have the pleasure to teach architectural drawing and drafting to a group of home school kids in our home school co-op once a month. They are so excited and enthusiastic, I could teach them every day! They remind me why I love design and drawing. (thank you guys!)
I decided to include a page here for them to use and for other home school families who are interested to study architecture. If you have a particular interest you'd like more information about, Email Me. I'd be glad to help!

Why Teach Architecture to YOUR kids?

See my explanation of how architecture can become an interdisciplinary approach for home school.

...and now, ANNOUNCING....

I've posted Lesson 1A in a unit study and Lesson 1B is the set of drawings to go along with it. If you complete 1A and wish to do 1B, email me and I'll send it out to you. I feel led to write a series of lessons on architecture directed at homeschoolers.
Here is a list of Units COMING SOON!
If you know of other families that could use my resources, please direct them here!

I also thought I'd list a couple of books that are full of great information and that you might enjoy. These are available for loan to my students because they are so comprehensive. However, many are difficult to find in the public library.

Architectural Resources For Home Schoolers.

BOOKS FOR RECOMMENDED READING: (generally high school level or higher)

Fundamentals of Building Construction Materials and Methods by Edward Allen
Second Edition Copyright 1990 by John Wiley and Sons.

This book describes in detail how buildings are contructed, different methods of construction, often step-by-step including photos. Concentrates mostly on commercial construction.

Architecture from Prehistory to Post-Modernism/The Western Tradition by Marvin Trachtenberg
Copyright 1986 by Harry N. Abrams, B.V.

This book is a very comprehensive history of architecture starting in the ancient world (i.e. Egypt, Crete, Stonehenge, etc.). It includes wonderful explanations of cathedral Architecture and of the role art plays in architecture throughout history.

Understanding Frank Lloyd Wright's Architecture by Donald Hoffman
Copyright 1995 by Donald Hoffman

Here is a book on the methods and ideas of Wright's designs. It tells a great deal about his beliefs that drive his designs. It also includes wonderful photos and original drawings.

MAGAZINES
There are a number of trade magazines out there on architecture.
My first choice for students is Architectural Digest with detailed articles, photos, features and drawings. It is often available at public libraries, (which is a good thing, since subscriptions and per-copy prices are rather high.)

I am planning to start a BOOK CLUB on my web site when things are up and running, so if you're interested, let me know! I expect to pick a topic each month and recommend reading for various age groups to discuss online.
