Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853 in Zundert Netherland. People think of two great Dutch artists. They are Rembrandt and van Gogh.

Van Gogh had a religious goal. He wanted to share his personal salvation with poor miners. He failed in this goal. This led him into painting full time.

Van Gogh put all of his energy and feelings into his art. This art became the first truly personal art. He showed that art could have the emotions of labor, love and pain.

His work was important. He powerfully affected the ideas of Expressionism in modern art.

He painted for only 10 years. Van Gogh painted with eye-catching color. He also painted with coarse brush work.

He liked Japanese art. He also liked Impressionism. He thought of his new art as both Impressionist and Japanese.

People think about van Gogh and remember the pain of a disorder of the mind. That pain led to van Gogh's death.
