Terminology & Definitions:

Assisted Living Communities-  Facilities that provide stimulating activities and opportunities for seniors to interact in a friendly environment.  Assisted living communities provide personal assistance as needed.  In addition, some facilities offer Alzheimer/dementia care in a separate secure section.  Some facilities also offer hospice care to terminally ill patients.  Assisted living facilities can accommodate 40 to 250 residents.  Shared rooms without assistance start at $950/month.  On average, private rooms start at $1,500/month.  Luxury accommodations are available at higher rate depending on amenities and location.

Residential Care (RCFE)-  RCFE’s and are often referred to as “Board and Care” homes house five to 250 residents.  These facilities provide three meals a day, supplement diets, assistance with medications, laundry, housekeeping services and help with bathing, grooming and dressing.  Incontinence care is also provided.  Rates start at $1,500/month for a shared room and $2,000/month for a private room.

Alzheimer’s Facilities-  These secure facilities are designed to provide supervision and care for people who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s.  Staff are required to have specialized training and work experience in caring for this kind of resident.  All such facilities have security systems in operation to help prevent residents from wandering away from the facility.
