This examination is designed to give the student, of whatever academic ability, the practice in and the assessment of their oral skills. It will help to heighten their aural sensibility so that listening becomes an active disciplined experience demanding reception, reflection and response. This experience can play a valuable role in preparing them for the oral examination, a compulsory component of the Leaving Certificate. The examination facilitates communication including interdisciplinary co-operation between teachers.
The prepared talk on an aspect of the Transition year programme gives the student an opportunity to present their Oral Presentation Skills. It enables them to learn the importance of clear structure and effective communication. Short notes may be used in this section of the examination.
This is a test of interpretation and co-ordination of eye, brain and speaking skills and ties neatly with the work of their English classes.
Conversation with the examiner is an important part of developing the student's ability to listen and respond in an effective reciprocal manner.
This examination is designed to encourage the student’s interest and appreciation of the requirements of performing music theatre. All the songs should be given a short introduction. Live accompaniment (piano, keyboard etc.) is recommended. However recorded music may be used provided it is properly synchronised and in no way inhibits the continuity of the performance. Costume and props may be used where they would enhance the performance. Copies of all pieces must be given to the examiner and the music used must be or have been commercially available. A photocopy of a piece may be used for the examiner provided the performeris using a true copy. The examiner at the end of the examination will then destroy the photocopy.
