It is possible to locate large numbers of Japanese and Japan-related web sites via the standard English language search engines and directories such as Google and Yahoo. Also see our Organizations page as some of the sites have extensive links and directories. However, the following are search and directory sites which are specifically Japanese and will lead to many thousands of Japanese sites.

Most of these web sites are in Japanese. Your computer's browser software (for example Microsoft Internet Explorer) will need to be able to handle Japanese characters to view the text on Japanese sites properly. Please see our Japanese Language section for information on this.

Yahoo! Japan
The Japanese version of the familiar Yahoo! directory. Similar structure to the UK and American sites but in Japanese.

Moshi Moshi
This search site, run by Pacific Software Publishing Inc, uses English keyword searches to find Japanese sites. Of course, the sites themselves are nearly all in Japanese. Many categories in the directory, including shopping, sport, art, employment and even an "adult only" section.

Excite Japan
The Japanese language version of the Excite web site with similar search and directory facilities to the English language version.

Japan Infoseek
Japanese version of the Infoseek search site. If you are struggling with the Japanese language, it may help to look at the layout of the English language version first. This also applies to sites such as Yahoo and Excite above.

Infoseek Woman
This is an offshoot of  Japan Infoseek aimed at teenage girls and young women, with categories such as diets, skincare, bridal and beauty.

Goo
This site, run by NTT, offers both an efficient search engine and an extensive directory in multiple categories such as travel, music, news, weather, sport, books and films. Also features a community section with chat, free mail service etc.

@nifty
Japanese directory with categories including business, travel, shopping, entertainment, money, travel, weather and many others. It uses Google for general searching.

Google Japan
The search results are plentiful and accurate, as you would expect from the Japanese version of the Google search engine.

Japan Reference Page 
Directory in English of Japan-related web sites. The categories include language, lifestyle, science, pop culture, sport, education, computers and travel. The directory is searchable and growing steadily into a major resource.

Japoo!
Links to English versions of Japanese web sites. The categories in the directory include arts and culture, music, travel, government, finance, business, sport and shopping.

Fresheye
A subsidiary of the Toshiba Corporation. The index contains only newly created or modified (within the last 2 months) sites, so should stay fresh - hence the name. Directory includes life & culture, news, television listings, food, weather and finance.

Japan.co.jp
Another directory of Japan-related web sites (non-Japanese language only) with over 80,000 links listed. There are 15 main categories, including society, travel, government, pop culture, education, science, shopping and entertainment.
