Perhaps the most photographed building from the Greek world, the tholos at Delphi continues to puzzle and perplex. |

Greek temples are built to a very regular, rectangular design, like the Parthenon. So why is this building round? Is it a temple at all? | Tholoi are quite rare. There is one in the Agora in Athens, but that one was certainly not a temple, but rather a place where the prytaneis met. Prytaneis were men who were selected each month to steer the buisness of the Athenian Council of 500 - the so-called boule. Alongside the tholos in this picture you can see a pair of treasuries like the ones at Delphi. |
