The sixth graders studied the art of ancient civilizations in social studies and in the art room. This included cave art, Egyptian art, Greek art and Roman art. A lot of what we know about these cultures we learned from their art. Students made cave paintings, Egyptian scarabs, Greek vases and Roman portrait busts. They drew large Greek columns on the sidewalk and wrote their names in hieroglyphs.
The Romans had portrait busts of their relatives in their homes. Roman art was realistic rather than idealistic. These are examples of East Ridge Middle School portrait busts created by sixth graders second quarter. The students were striving for realism in their work.
The sixth graders began their study of art by making a foil sculpture that represented them. The students first study gesture drawing and try to capture motion in their 3D foil form. After the sculpture is complete, each student must compose a written explanation of his "mini-me" and how or why the foil figure represents him.
