In August,1984

On August 31,1984...my husband had to work late. The oldest of our 5 children had gone to work with him.

Upon returning home about midnight, my husband ask me why I had allowed our 4 younger children to fall off to sleep on our bedroom floor. I told him it was okay...we'd just leave them there because he was too tired to carry them upstairs to their bedrooms.

My oldest son went his room upstairs and went to bed,and at the same time my husband and I went to bed downstairs in the same room our smaller children were sleeping in.

About 4 a.m. the following morning, I was awakened by my oldest son telling me that the upstairs was completely in flames.

A storm was taking place, and lightning had just struck wires in our attic.
We jumped up and looked upstairs...and how that boy was able to get down those stairs, we will never know!
We removed all of our children and my disabled sister from the house and stood in the front yard and watched it burn.We had no Insurance.

After the firemen put out the fire, I overheard one of them telling his co-worker that he would have to stop by the emergency room for treatment, on his way back to his station. I walked up to him and ask him why he needed medical treatment, and he told me that a TV had exploded upstairs while he was fighting the fire from a ladder causing a little injury to his face.
He waited until the fire was out to tell his co-workers.
A few days later we rented an old shack to get our family back in order, so they could start school the following day.

The next day, a truck backed in and I walked out onto the porch to see who it was. It was the firefighters with a truck load of furniture, food, etc.that they had purchased for my family.
For a few weeks, we had to use T-shirts for towels and torn up clothes for washcloths, and an ice chest for a refrigerator,
but in the end, we felt like we were the luckiest people on Earth!

We did not lose a single life. My children's clothes that I had just bought for the start of school may have burned, but that was okay.

I was proud to allow them to start on their first day back to school,in hand-me-downs,
with a BIG smile on my face!
