Chapter 3 : Hot Chocolate & Questions

Wufei ran back to the little coffee shop as fast as he could, tears streaming down his face. It hurt so much, seeing Heero and Duo kiss. The pain radiated from his chest and spread to the rest of his body, numbing it to a degree that the cold weather could not achieve. He never dreamed it would hurt so much, seeing Heero and Duo together. Yes, he had expected them to hook up eventually, but what surprised him the most was the pain he felt over losing Heero as well. Since when was he interested in Heero?

Wufei pushed the door open to the coffee shop, not even looking behind him. On the table sat three hot chocolates, waiting for their owners. The last thing Wufei wanted now was hot chocolate. All he wanted to do was crawl into a hole and die, but he knew he'd have to go out and face them eventually or they'd start to wander where he went. It wasn't like they knew he saw them. He just wanted a few minutes to calm down and collect his thoughts before that time came.

"Shit." Heero muttered as Wufei turned to flee. They'd screwed this up BIG time and now he needed to do something. Heero quickly dropped his grip on Duo, sending the braided boy to the ground as he skated quickly away.

"Hey!" Duo exclaimed as his ass hit the ice. One minute he had been kissing Heero and the next thing he knew, the Japanese boy was skating away from him as fast as he could. What happened?!

"Wufei...saw us." Heero yelled back as he skated towards Trowa and Quatre. Guilt filled Heero's mind as he realized that he was about to interrupt what could have eventually been their first kiss, but he couldn't just leave Duo out there on the ice. The two pilots were talking in hushed whispers about who knows what and their faces were a mere two inches apart. Heero sighed as he approached them. Trowa would kill him for this later.

"Quatre, help Duo off the ice." Heero stated as he grabbed the blonde's arm in passing. Trowa flashed a frustrated glance at Heero before his face turned to one of concern. He'd never seen the Wing pilot look so upset. Trowa nodded quickly and Heero took off towards the exit of the rink. Understanding came as Trowa looked down the path just in time to see Wufei pull open the door to the coffee shop.

Though he had no idea what was going on, Quatre followed Heero's orders and began to skate over to where Duo sat on the ice, a look of distress on his face. The braided boy had barely caught Heero's last words, but it was enough to get his attention. He couldn't believe he'd let this happen. Heero's only instructions in beginning this relationship was that he didn't want to hurt Wufei, and what had he gone and done? It had been 3 hours since he made that promise before going and breaking it. He felt awful and, to make matters worse, he felt like he'd LIED to him. Duo took a deep breath as his eyes began to sting, chanting to himself as Quatre pulled him up onto his feet, Trowa standing beside him.

"boys don't cry... boys don't cry... boys don't cry..."

"Duo? Are you ok?" Quatre interrupted as Trowa took his other arm so that they could balance him.

Duo blinked and the tears spilled out from his eyes.

"Please... I need to get to Wufei and Heero..."
Heero pulled off his skates as quickly as he could, not even bothering to put his shoes on as he ran towards the coffee shop, opting to carry them instead. All he could think about was how to explain this. That was supposed to be Duo's job, not his. Duo was good at talking, Duo would know what to do. Heero didn't even know if Wufei liked him. How was he supposed to make Wufei feel better?

His thoughts came to a halt as he pulled open the door. Wufei sat in the corner of the room, huddled in the back of a booth with his knees pulled up against his chest, his head resting against them. Heero watched for a moment as Wufei's shoulder's trembled with silent sobbing. He didn't want to interrupt Wufei while he was crying for he knew it made the Chinese boy feel weak, but he also didn't want to sit and watch him suffer until then.

"Wufei?"

Wufei wrapped his arms tighter around him, never looking up at his friend.

"Go away, Yuy."

Ignoring the distressed boy's request, Heero slid into the booth beside Wufei, dropping his shoes on the floor beside them. He knew he had to say something, he just wasn't sure what it was. Right now his main concern was that Wufei knew that Duo liked him, not that he did as well. If he added that in, he was sure he'd screw something up.

"Wufei... I'm sorry... I, I mean, Duo, he..."

Wufei took a deep breath, trying his best to collect himself as Heero sat down beside him. He hated looking like this in front of other people and Heero was at the top of that list. What did he want anyway? Saying he was sorry didn't change the fact that his heart was broken. He didn't need an explanation to know what had happened. It was obvious that the two of them had finally gotten together, so why was Heero in here bothering him? He just wanted to be left alone.

"I know. I saw. Now can you just-"

"-he likes you. He likes you a lot, Wufei."

Heero just spat out the first thing he could think of and Wufei raised his head out from his arms. His dark onyx eyes were red and puffy and his cheeks were swollen, but the look on his face held as much dignity he could gather up. He did not want to hear lies just to make him feel better.

"Heero, be quiet. It's not like you to feed me lies out of pity and even if it was true, you know you're saying it out of context. I know he likes me, but he will never like me in that way, not the way I like him at least. That's how he likes you. I can accept that. Now just leave me alone."

"That's not true."

Both boys silenced and turned to the new voice, neither having noticed his approach during Wufei's rant. Duo stood at the end of the table, serious, upset, and extremely pissed off. His glare turned first to Heero, who shrunk back towards Wufei under it's normally unseen power.

"YOU left me out on the ice, by myself, without explanation..."

Wufei followed Heero's lead as Duo turned to him, almost sliding down under the table to escape.

"...and YOU are assuming things that are entirely incorrect and won't even listen to the truth."

Duo plopped down on the opposite side of the booth, facing a very nervous Heero and a very confused Wufei. He was highly annoyed at both of them at the moment and instead of acting too quickly, he took his time to think through the situation while sipping on one of the cups of hot chocolate. Originally, he'd been upset at messing everything up. It had been his fault, after all, he was the one who kissed Heero and sent Wufei running. But then it was obvious that Heero couldn't handle the situation himself and it seemed that Wufei was too upset to listen to what he had to say anyways.

The braided boy sighed and took one last sip of the chocolate before raising his eyes to meet those across from him. This would have been so much easier had he NOT kissed Heero.

"Ok... First of all, I need to apologize for screwing up. I had a plan on how to handle this, but I don't think it will work now, considering the circumstances..."

"Wufei... I, I like you, just like I like Heero, in the same way, in the same amount. I just didn't realize you were interested until Heero pointed it out to me. I know I should have noticed, but I just wasn't paying attention. I'm sorry..."

"What we had wanted to talk to you about was that I, I mean we, Heero and I, we both like you and... and if you like us, both of us, then, ummm, we were wondering if you would consider a... a relationship..."

Wufei stared at Duo, blinking, as he tried to understand exactly what Duo was trying to say. Duo liked him... Heero liked him?...'they' wanted a relationship? He turned quickly to look at Heero, who flinched slightly at the unwanted attention, but didn't seem to be disagreeing with what Duo said. Turning back to Duo, Wufei asked the first question that came to mind.

"You BOTH want a... relationship?"

Both boys nodded as Duo played nervously with his braid and Heero decidedly found his hot chocolate interesting. Wufei's eyes traveled back and forth between the two boys. The information was almost too much to handle; one minute he thought that he was utterly alone, the next he had not one, but two of his friends telling him that they liked him. The whole idea almost scared him and he wasn't really sure what to say.

"...ok."

Duo immediately brightened. Was that an agreement with the proposal? Was Wufei really ok with this? Several questions passed through Duo's brain before he blew them off and leaned across the table to hug Wufei. Unfortunately, Duo forgot about the now cold chocolate drinks sitting on the table and managed to knock over one in his excitement, spilling it down the front of his shirt and all over Wufei's lap.

"Maxwell!"

Wufei jumped up, out of Duo's grip, as liquid chocolate dripped down the front of him. Duo, also soaked, stood across from him laughing happily. The tension that had appeared around the conversation's subject quickly lifted as Heero ran to get some napkins, handing several to Duo before helping Wufei himself. Wufei continued to rant as Heero patted the Chinese teen dry, until he suddenly noticed what Heero was doing and paused mid-sentence to question his Japanese friend.

"Yuy, what are you doing?"

Heero immediately froze, then jumped quickly away as he realized where his hand had stopped, his face turning a bright shade of red, rarely seen on the face of the Perfect Soldier. Wufei had to bite his lip to stop himself from laughing. It dawned upon him that while Heero was fully confident in battle, this was one situation that he was not. Wufei had never shown any outward attraction to the Wing pilot and he was now noticing the consequences. Heero was jumpy and nervous, signs that he was unsure of his position, and Wufei now knew he needed reassurance.

"It's ok, Heero. Arigatou."

Slowly, Wufei lowered his hand, intertwining his fingers with Heero's, their eyes never leaving each other's for a moment. Wufei gently squeezed and relaxed as a small smile spread across Heero's face. Duo just sat there, grinning like a madman as he cleaned the mess of himself. He could never have arranged this to work out this perfectly, things just happened that way on their own.

"Hey guys! What's up?"

Quatre's cheery voice broke into the silence and Duo absently wondered how long his other two friends had been waiting outside before finding it safe to enter. The little blonde surveyed the table as he and Trowa approached, softly laughing to himself.

"Would you like another round of hot chocolates? This one doesn't seem fit to drink."

Looking at the mess on the table, Duo agreed. While he had drank his own, he could gladly have another and he had managed to spill Wufei's while Heero's was cold. Quatre ran off to order the drinks, leaving Trowa standing over the table. Heero watched as Trowa's eyes flickered with amusement, his gaze upon the linked hands beneath the table.

"Is everything ok?" Trowa asked Heero softly.

"Everything's fine... Sorry for throwing Duo at you."

Trowa's lips curled into a slight smirk as he took a seat next to Heero and Wufei, leaving room for Quatre to sit next to Duo on the other side.

"Don't worry about it, you had more... important things to attend to... Your timing sucks though."

Duo laughed out loud at this, knowing exactly what they had interrupted, but surprised that Trowa would admit to it. Wufei just watched the exchange with interest and decided that he would have to ask them about it later. Heero whispered his response as Quatre returned to the table, five hot chocolates balanced on a tray, all topped with whip cream.

"I'll make it up to you."

"Make what up, Heero?" Quatre questioned.

"Nothing..."

Heero shook his head and Quatre's eyes narrowed. He knew the Japanese teen was lying, but if Heero didn't want to tell him, then he wasn't going to push it. He'd just ask Trowa about it later.

"Well, then... Can I propose a toast?"

Duo giggled. "Sure, Q-man. We're in a coffee shop, drinking hot chocolate, but don't let that stop you."

Quatre shrugged. He didn't care where they were, he felt like it anyways. He raised his drink and everyone followed.

"To good friends, new relationships, and all things yet to come. Let them fill the season with laughter and fun."

With this the dignified Quatre Rebarba Winner stuck out his tongue and rolled his eyes. Each boy couldn't help but laugh as they drank, effectively covering their noses with whip cream. The evening was still young, but for now they would sit in each other's company and enjoy the warmth as fresh snow fell to the air on that cold January evening.
