Winter Wishes
Chapter 2 : Ice Skating & Mistakes
Quatre happily tightened
the laces to his skates, excited about the chance to teach Trowa something for
once. He absolutely adored the HeavyArms pilot and would do anything just to be
around him. After spending the morning relaxing around the house, Duo and Heero
had returned late afternoon so that they could all go ice skating together.
Quatre had been surprised at how cheerful Heero had been, encouraging Wufei to
set down the book and come out with them. Though the little blonde suspected
something was up, he couldn't pinpoint it and had finally let it drop. If it was
important enough, then it was sure to come up later and it was better to just
enjoy the evening at the skating rink.
The tall, green-eyed pilot had
never put on a pair of skates in his life, not exactly having time for such a
thing in his youth, and had taken the blonde up on his offer, silently hoping
for lessons in more than just skating. Trowa mentally slapped himself for that
thought, trying his best not to think hentai thoughts around the innocent little
blonde. He felt as if that was all he thought about lately, his daydreams moving
from the warm, fuzzy feelings that he originally got to a more racy side that he
felt was hardly appropriate. When his feelings towards Quatre evolved from
friendship into something more, he wasn't sure, but he knew it was more than the
random waves of lust that sometimes flowed through his body. It was an emotion
he could only describe to himself as love, a word which scared him to death with
the power it usually held when spoken.
Trowa wasn't actually worried
about learning to skate. If he could walk a tight-rope in the circus, then he
definitely had the balance to ice skate, but Quatre had seemed so excited about
teaching him that he thought it would be more fun this way. The little blonde
seemed to have taken lessons in everything as a child, ranging from playing the
violin to speaking almost every language imaginable. Ice skating was just
another one of those many talents the Sandrock pilot had
accumulated.
Quatre walked over and sat down on the bench next to Trowa
as he finished adjusting the laces to his own skates. The outside skating rink
sat in the center of the little village, lined with trees that were brightly lit
up to help illuminate the ice in the moonlight. The cold night air blew through
Quatre's hair as he looked out on the rink to see Heero and Wufei pull Duo
across the ice. Though it had been the American's idea to come, he himself had
never been skating. Heero had been quick to pick up the sport, like always, and
Wufei already knew how to skate, probably picking it up sometime in his
childhood, the same way that Quatre had. The two Oriental boys each had a hold
of one of Duo's hand and were currently dragging him across the ice with his
eyes closed, yelling for them to stop between laughs.
"What do you
think's going on with them?"
Trowa looked up to watch their three friends
for a brief moment. Heero had talked to him before about his problems with Duo.
From their last conversation, he was under the impression that Heero would not
pursue Duo as long as Wufei was interested in him, but from the way things were
currently looking, it appeared that Heero had changed his mind. But then, it
also seemed that they were including Wufei...
"I don't know,
but..."
Quatre raised an eyebrow. Trowa knew more than he was letting on
and he knew it, but getting the quiet boy to say what he was thinking was like
pulling out teeth.
"But what, Trowa?"
Trowa thought for a moment,
carefully considering his words. He wasn't sure what Quatre knew, but he knew
what was obvious to them all.
"Heero would not hurt Wufei."
Quatre
nodded, thinking the statement over in his head. Like Duo, he hadn't noticed
where the Chinese boy's affection was aimed, but from Trowa's statement, he knew
that Wufei either liked Heero or Duo and that Heero was the one in control of
the situation. He also knew that Duo liked Heero. Everyone knew that, even
though the American seemed to think not.
Finally giving up on figuring it
all out, Quatre directed his thoughts back to his own relationship problems. He
was getting sick of waiting on Trowa to make a move. Either the taller boy
wasn't interested or he was too shy to actually go through with anything. It was
getting to the point that Quatre was ready to do something himself, but he
wasn't quite sure if Trowa was interested in him. In fact, he wasn't even sure
if Trowa was interested in boys in general. There really hadn't been any clues
as to where Trowa's preferences lie, but all Quatre needed was one little hint.
If Trowa would give him any sign, no matter how small, that he liked him, then
Quatre would proceed, but until then, he would settle for the two of them
remaining best friends. He liked Trowa too much to risk their
friendship.
"Don't let
me fall, don't let me fall, don't let me fall!!!"
"Maxwell! You're not
going to fall! So stop...yelling."
Wufei paused, realizing that his own
voice was raised in an effort to be heard over Duo's whining. The braided boy
wasn't really even trying to skate. How could he if he wouldn't even open his
eyes? Wufei wasn't complaining, though. Duo was clutching to him as if his life
depended on it and it filled Wufei with a warmth that wasn't entirely from the
body heat that Duo was giving off. Anything that let him be so close to the
American was worth it... though the yelling was starting to hurt his
ears.
Duo laughed quietly to himself. He had started noticing Wufei
immediately, now that he wasn't totally preoccupied with Heero. He was currently
enjoying himself by seeing how many times he could make Wufei blush within the
hour. Unfortunately for Wufei, this was a task easily accomplished and Duo
seemed to be an expert at it.
Purposely loosening his grip on Heero, Duo
pressed the toe-pick into the ice. The result was a spectacular fall that pulled
Wufei on top of Duo, pressed chest to chest, their noses only inches away from
each other. Both boys stayed still for a moment, their breath mingling in the
cold winter air. Duo watched, fascinated, as Wufei's face slowly turned a
brilliant shade of red for the fifth time that evening. As he snapped back to
consciousness, the Chinese boy pulled himself up, quietly mumbling apologies
that others rarely heard.
"Don't worry about it 'Fei. It was my fault. If
I wasn't such a klutz, we wouldn't have fallen. Heero's lucky not to have been
brought down as well. Then we would have all been cold!"
Heero attached
himself to Duo's other arm as he stood back up. He had felt Duo release his arm
moments before and realized that the braided boy intentionally fallen, so now he
was watching the scene with growing interest. He suddenly realized that the way
Duo was treating Wufei was how Duo usually flirted with him. Heero tried his
best not to laugh. Did Duo genuinely think that Wufei wouldn't notice the
difference? Heero didn't care, he was just worried about weather or not Wufei
liked him as well. What would happen if Wufei was only interested in Duo? Would
Duo choose-
"Yuy, are you there?"
"Hmm?" Heero snapped out of his
thoughts, not catching whatever Wufei had been asking him.
Wufei smiled
and shook his head. He'd never seen Heero so spacey. The Japanese boy had been
like that since he'd come back from sledding with Duo, and though Wufei noticed
a significant difference in the way he acted around Duo, it didn't seem to be
restricted just to the American. Wufei had noticed Heero staring at him a lot
lately, even more this evening then ever before. At first, he thought he'd done
something wrong, that he was on the receiving end of Heero's death glare. Then
he realized that it wasn't anger or annoyance in Heero's eyes, but something
that he couldn't quite identify. Something that it seemed Heero didn't
understand himself until after he came back from sledding. Now it was clearer
than ever, but Wufei still wasn't sure he could pinpoint the feelings behind
Heero's gaze.
Sometimes he thought it was desire he saw in Heero's gaze,
or a fondness that he usually saw the Wing pilot direct towards his beloved
Shinigami, but that didn't make since to Wufei. If Heero liked anyone, then he
liked Duo, so he must have been misreading him, right?
"Can you handle
Duo while I go get us some hot chocolate? I think it should warm us up a
little."
Heero nodded and tightened his grip on Duo's arm as Wufei moved
gracefully off the ice.
"You could have hurt yourself, pulling off a
stunt like that. The ice is hard, you know."
Duo smirked.
"I'm not
that stupid, Hee-chan. I knew what I was doing. Anyways, the worst I could do
would be to bruise my tailbone."
Heero's lips curled, revealing a small
smile as he debated weather or not to speak his thoughts aloud. Duo caught sight
of Heero's face and raised an eyebrow in question, trying to figure out what the
Japanese boy thought was so funny, and Heero gave in.
"Are you sure that
doesn't bother you? It could very possibly... inhibit your activities
later."
The American's eyes grew wide as the implications of Heero's
statement became clear to him. Yes, a bruised tailbone would be a VERY bad idea
now, so Duo would definitely not try THAT again. Duo blinked as he realized that
it was Heero who had pointed this out to him.
"Heero! Since when are you
such a hentai?!"
Duo laughed as Heero's face flared up in a blush. He
wasn't actually surprised that Heero would think of such a thing, it was just
unusual for him to actually voice it out loud. Even better still, it made The
Perfect Soldier blush.
"I... I didn't mean..."
"Don't worry about
it, Yuy."
Duo moved to wrap his arms around Heero, glancing over his
shoulder at Quatre and Trowa in the process. The other two boys looked quite
cozy together, Duo thought, and hoped that maybe their relationship would take
off soon.
"Heero," Duo whispered. "Look at them."
Heero tugged Duo
around so that he could face into the skating rink. On the other side were
Quatre and Trowa, leaning against the wall, talking silently about some unknown
subject. Trowa's arms were wrapped around Quatre's waist, his face only inches
from the smaller boy's as he listened to him chatter. Quatre's hands were
pressed against Trowa's chest, placed so that they looked as if the blonde pilot
were actually pulling him in closer rather than pushing him away. Heero wondered
what would take for those hands to snake up around the taller boy's neck and
pull him down for a kiss. He smiled at the thought, knowing that Quatre would go
through with it as soon as he had some kind of proof that Trowa liked
him.
"Whatcha thinkin' about?"
Heero looked into the bright violet
orbs before him, drowning in their depths as he mumbled his reply.
"I was
just wondering how long it will take Trowa to give Quatre some kind of sign that
he likes him. You know that as soon as he does, Quatre will jump him,
right?"
Duo laughed outright at that image. Little, innocent Quatre
jumping anyone would be quite a sight to see.
"You warn me when you think
it's gonna happen, ok? I wanna be there to witness it. Those two should've
gotten together a long time ago... but then, we should've as well."
Duo
leaned closer into Heero's embrace, his warmth surrounding him.
"True,
but we didn't know a lot either. We still don't know if Chang will accept me.
What if he doesn't, Duo? What will we do?"
Duo pressed a finger to
Heero's lips, effectively shushing him up.
"Don't worry about it. I'm
sure everything will be fine. We'll both talk to him later tonight and we'll
figure it all out. Until then, just enjoy yourself and stop worrying about
it."
As Duo finished speaking, he slowly moved his finger away from
Heero's mouth and moved in to replace it with his lips. Heero's instinctively
shut his eyes and leaned into Duo's kiss for the third time that day. The kiss
was soft and short, tongues barely probing at each other in exploration. Heero
pulled away slowly, temporarily reassured that everything would be all
right.
It was then, as Heero opened his eyes, that he saw Wufei on the
other side of the rink. The Chinese boy stood facing them, hands hanging limply
at his side and his mouth slightly open in surprise. Turning quickly, he moved
to retreat, never hearing Heero's frantic calls as a single tear rolled down his
cheek.
