Halo: Combat Evolved

Halo: Combat Evolved, started its life as a PC game. However, Microsoft bought the company Bungie, who was making this game, and made them put it on Xbox. The result is the best game yet to appear on the Xbox console.

Graphically, Halo is amazing. Running at a solid 30 FPS, the gameplay never slows down. The levels are all huge, the shadows and lighting are excellently done, the effects are cool, and the character designs are very original. Also, the levels are diverse for the most part, and they are superbly designed. The animation is excellent, from the little subtle motions of reloading your gun to the enemy troops diving to take cover, the whole game has this incredible sense of realism that really immerses you in the game. To top it all off, the physics are very cool, leading to some awesome death animations. From a visual standpoint, Halo is a great title, and it definitely showcases the capabilities of the Xbox well.

Halo, suprisingly enough, has a really good story. The game puts you in the shoes of a master chief, who is an elite warrior defending earth from an alien race called the Covenant. The story starts you off with your ship being attacked by Covenant forces, forcing you to flee to a nearby planet. There, everything goes to hell, as you are forced to not only fight the Covenant, but a newly discoverd race called the Flood as well. Suffice to say, the story has enough of its own twists and turns, and can be quite interesting at times. The story in Halo is the best since Half-life's, and it definitely serves to get you involved with the gameplay.

In terms of the combat, Halo is excellent. The weapon diversity is great, and the fact that every weapon is useful is a tribute to the excellent game design. The ability to hold only two weapons is a great idea as well, as it makes you have to think about what weapon is best suited for the situation your going to get into next. The vehicles too, were implemented well, with the totally awesome ability to have one person drive and the other man a turret or fire out the sides. The enemy AI takes the cake for combat though, in that its so good that it makes every encounter totally different. This, unfortunately, only applies to when your fighting the Covenant, as the Flood have a much lower intelligence and they really just swarm you and use little strategy. This fact makes the game seriously go down in quality when your fighting the Flood. They should have just kept everything Covenant. Besides this enemy AI issue, the combat in Halo is excellent.
