Halo: Combat Evolved

As a single player experience, Halo is awesome. The levels that you play in are all quite cool, the allies that help you are actually helpful, and the great enemy AI definitely keeps you on your feet. The placement of weapons and vehicles is excellent, in that they are placed only where necessary. The freedom to choose different ways to tackle each level is also cool, due to the excellent balance that this game achieves. The mission objectives, which are given to you at various points during a level, are all diverse and greatly add to the fun factor of this game. The only gripe I have with the solo campaign is the fact that many of the levels are just variations on previous levels. On the whole though, the single player mode of Halo provides a very good time.

When the single player grows stale, multiplayer comes to save the day. With the ability to play the campaign mode cooperatively, the main game greatly increases in fun, due to the ability to strategize and ride vehicles with your friends. Besides the campaign mode, the actual multiplayer mode is excellent as well. The levels are good for the most part, and the ability to use vehicles in a game is incredibly fun. The ability to create your own game types greatly adds to the diversity of the matches, and increases the longevity of this title. To top it off is the ability to link multiple Xbox's together, allowing for sixteen people total to compete. This is great fun, especially when you can put your teammates on a vehicle and go to battle against an opposing force. All in all, Halo provides one hell of a multiplayer mode.

Halo is an excellent game. With great graphics, great level design, cool characters, an enthralling story, and excellent solo and multiplayer modes, this title has it all. The originality and well-implementation of vehicles is much appreciated, as is the overall great AI. The flaws stated earlier do bring this game down, but only a little, and only in a few case situations do they actually even affect you. Overall, Halo is the best game on Xbox, and is second only to Half-life in the whole FPS genre.

Graphics Absolutely amazing. The effects are excellent, the artwork is well-done, the levels are designed well, the lighting is excellent, and the character models are quite realistic. The animation, too, is well-done and gives the game a realism not seen in many games. The fact that there is no slowdown is awesome, and greatly helps the game keep a steady pace. From a visual standpoint, Halo is excellent all-around, and is a great showcase title for the Xbox system. 10/10
Gameplay Absolutely excellent. The levels are designed very well, the balance is great, the vehicles and weapons are well-implemented, and the enemy AI is quite good. The single player mode is immersive and varied, and the multiplayer is what Goldeneye was back several years ago. The only problems I have with this game is the overall quality drop with the introduction of the Flood and the fact that many levels are just rehashes of ones you've played earlier. Besides these two little nitpicks, Halo's gameplay is excellent. 9.6/10
Story The story, suprisingly enough, is actually rather enthralling. It is definitely one of the best that I've seen in a FPS. The only problem, however, is that it really rips off a lot of its content from videogames and movies that came before it, making certain events rather predictable. However, the fact that a FPS actually has a good story is enough for me. 8.9/10
Replay The replay value of this game is very high. The single player mode has multiple difficulties, and its worth playing through every one of them. Also, the enemy AI makes every encounter different, greatly increasing the longevity. Finally, the multiplayer mode just does not get old, and it will provide for hours of fun. On the whole, a game that you will not put down very quickly. 9.8/10
Overall If you own an Xbox, you must own this game. It is absolutely excellent, and will provide you with hours of fun. There's just so many innovating and clever things about this title that make it great. From the awesome campaign to the great multiplayer, everything in this title just screams quality. Besides a few minor gripes, Halo: Combat Evolved is a great game and is one that is destined to be a classic. 9.7/10
