Super Smash Brothers Melee

What originally seemed to be a rehash of the original N64 hit, Super Smash Bros. Melee exceeded my expectations in every way. It is such a huge improvement over its N64 predecessor, and is easily one of the top games for the Gamecube.

Graphically, the new Smash Bros. looks excellent. The characters are all well-animated, smooth-looking, and all-around good looking. The special effects are amazing to behold, and serve to enhance the game. The improvement on the levels is perhaps the biggest graphical improvement, however, in that they are far larger, they change over time, and are absolutely beautiful overall.

Super Smash Bros. Melee has a combat system similiar to the original Smash Bros. There are your smash attacks, your combos, air juggles, specials, etc... But, the gameplay has been improved a ton over the original. For one, the battle pace has been sped up a ton, leading to more hectic battles. Also, the number of moves for each character has increased quite a bit, adding greatly to the depth of gameplay. The character balance as well has been improved, making all characters pretty much equal. Not only is the balance better, but the roster of nintendo characters has doubled since the original. The combat system in Smash Bros. Melee is a huge improvement over its already impressive N64 counterpart.

Now to talk about the single player enhancements.. While I know the original Smash Bros had an awful single player game, its sequel has been remedied of this problem. There are so many new modes and unlockable features that you'll play for weeks to try to get them all. Some new game types include adventure mode, in which you play through classic nintendo levels, event mode, in which you have to complete a certain task, classic mode, and many more. The number of new features added to this sequel is mind boggling. Believe me, the single player modes of melee will keep you occupied for weeks.

Finally, the multiplayer mode. Melee's multiplayer mode has been so much improved over its sequel, in just about every way imaginable. The number of items has increased by quite a bit, including the mushroom! The customizability in multiplay is also much improved, allowing you to change pretty much any settings in a game, from the speed to the size of the characters. To top off this package are the excellent levels, which are not only designed very well, but also change over time. The multiplayer mode in Smash Bros. Melee makes this game the perfect party game.

To sum it all up, Super Smash Bros. Melee is one excellent game. Not only does it offer up an excellent single player experience, but it offers what is perhaps the best multiplayer gaming around. So, if you own a Gamecube, Melee is a must own, in that it is one of the best games available for the system.

Graphics The graphics in Melee are smooth, colorful, diverse, and all around beautiful. The animation and effects have never been better. The levels, too, are larger, prettier, and on the whole better designed than its N64 prequel. Visually, Melee is excellent-looking. 9.5/10
Gameplay The gameplay in melee is excellent. The combat system is easy to get into, yet provides a ton of depth. The character balance is excellent, the multiplayer is perhaps the best available, and the single player mode is incredibly entertaining. The improvements made over the original Smash Bros. are incredible, from the changing levels to the much larger character rooster and beyond. The gameplay in this game is absolutely sound. 9.7/10
Story Story? Does Super Smash Bros. even have a story? The booklet tells more of the plot than the actual game. No big deal though, considering the fact that games like this don't need a story to be fun. 1.0/10
Replay One of the highest replay values of any game available. The amount of modes and things to do in single player alone will keep you busy for weeks. However, after the single player mode there is multiplayer, which never gets old with this excellent title. 10/10
Overall Super Smash Bros. Melee is top-notch. One of the best multiplayer games around, while still providing an enjoyable solo experience. Melee is definitely one of the best titles out for the Gamecube. Not only that, but it is also one of the best games created and a must-own for all Gamecube owners. 9.7/10
