Unreal Tournament

Ah...Unreal Tournament. What an excellent PC game. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Dreamcast version. All you really need to know from this review is that the PC Version is good and the DC Version is bad. However, if you want to find out why, then by all means read on.

Unreal Tournament for the PC is an excellent game. Read this review to find out why. However, as a Dreamcast game it has lost a lot of its luster. First of all, unlike the PC version, the max opponents in a match on the Dreamcast version is 8-people. Not only that, but only a few select levels can have up to 8-people, while the majority of the other levels have an even lower limit to the amount of players. This is only one of the flaws that plagues this port.

Ok, the DC version of Unreal Tournament has a low player count. What other flaws does it have, you ask? Well, the splitscreen mode in this game is absolutely awful! The amount of slowdown in 2-player can be dealt with, but with any more the slowdown makes the game unplayable. Also, in splitscreen many of the games best levels cannot be played, which sucks a lot. Believe me, the splitscreen is a real let down in this game.

Now, let me talk to you about the rest of the problems in the game. The control absolutely sucks, and the worst part is that they cannot be customized, which only adds to the problem. Besides the horrendous controls, one of the largest flaws in this game is the ommission of assault mode! Yes, the best mode in the PC version was cut out. Believe me, the Dreamcast version of Unreal Tournament was butchered on its way from PC to DC.

Unreal Tournament for Dreamcast is by no means an awful game. However, it just doesn't do its PC version justice. The list of flaws and cuts just ruin the whole experience. Unreal Tournament is a perfect example of why games really shouldn't be ported as a means of cashing in on a game.

Graphics The graphics in Unreal Tournament are definitely not up to Dreamcast standards. The slowdown that occurs in the game is unexcusable, and really hurts the game. Also, the graphics are not improved at all over its PC counterpart. The graphics in this game taint the good name of UT. 7.5/10
Gameplay This is where UT really gets hurt, especially since I had such high expectations for it after playing the PC version. Unfortunately for me, I was in for a disappointing experience. The game is just way too flawed to be much fun. If you want to play Unreal Tournament, play it on PC and skip out on the DC version. 6.9/10
Story As with the PC version, the Dreamcast version's story has not improved one bit. The game still has no purpose, but most FPS are like that anyway. This is the only part of the Unreal Tournament game that has survived the port, which is a pretty sad thing. 1.0/10
Replay The PC version has a pretty high replay value. The Dreamcast version also has a pretty high replayabilty, although not as high as its PC counterpart's. Unreal Tournament's skill based gameplay makes you want to come back and improve your skills, even though the gameplay is pretty lackluster. 8.1/10
Overall The Dreamcast version of UT just does not compare to the PC version, and this is probably what hurt this game most. It just didn't meet certain expectations that I had for it. The game, in my opinion, was butchered during the port process, which really ruined the Unreal Tournament experience for me. If you don't have a PC, then just skip Unreal Tournament altogether and play Quake. You'll be much happier. 7.0/10
