What is D.N. Angel and who created it?
D.N. Angel is Yukiru Sugisaki's latest manga to hit the market and is
published monthly (usually) in its serial magazine, Asuka. And of spring of 2003
the animated series made its appearance in Japan. Of the three series featured on this
site I find D.N. ANGEL to have the worst animated series. It doesn't even follow the storylines
from the manga and only has trace elements and characters that link back to the original
series. I'm sorry, but I find it pretty weak. Her other works include "Candidate for
Goddess", "Brain Powered", and "Sotsuguyo M" which she mainly did the drawings
for and the story was written by another author I believe. Sugisaki's latest series was
featured in the monthly "Asuka" magazine where she published a short
running story called "Lagoon Engine". It ran for a few months worth of
Asuka and is now published in tankoubans, the first volume already out
and the second due sometime in August 2003 but that'S about all I know about it.
I didn't take much interest in it when
I was browsing through one of my favorite DN angel websites - OFFRAMP
(You can find a link to it in the links page). OFFRAMP does have a small feature
page about it - drawings are extremely toothaching sweet & at the same time,
the art is amazing. Sugisaki-sensei is truly gifted when it comes to drawing!
The Story...
The story goes like this: Daisuke Niwa(the cute red head on top), a young thirteen year old junior high student is about to have his 14th
birthday. He decided to admit his feelings to his object of affection, Risa Harada, the younger twin in his class.
She rejects him. Risa thinks that, well, I guess Daisuke is a little too plain for her. So, he's crushed, decided
to go home. Now here's the funny part: most people walk up the front porch and enter through the door and screams
out "I'm home!". Not Daisuke. Everyday, he must go through an obstacle course that is set up in the front yard all the
way to the front door. Now, this isn't some easy little obstacle course. He's pushed to the limit with all kinds of traps and lasers and the works. Supposedly
his grandfather and mother are 'training' him. Training for what? Read on! And yes, poor Daisuke has to go through
this weird obstacle course even on his birthday *sigh*. He makes it to the front door like every day but he's in
no mood to chat with his family inside and decides to sulk in his room (his heart was ripped to shreds! Poor fellow).
Downstairs, his mother asks his grandfather if he thinks our Daisuke is ready. Ready for what? Again, read on. In
his room, he greets his pet rabbit and says he sorry that he didn't take him to school today (strange, huh? a 14 yr.
old taking his pet rabbit to school...he should know by that age, show & tell isn't mandatory in class.) So he sits
there, sulking, thinking again and again on how Risa had rejected him when a strange sensation overcame him. His
body temperature started to rise and he felt very hot. He grew. Daisuke's hair was no longer red, his voice
changed, he's taller and he turned into a man in mere seconds (and boy, is he a man...heehee) Daisuke is
totally freaked out and runs downstairs to find his mother. He asks her what the heck is going on while his mother took
a few moments to check out the handsome man in front of her (well, since Daisuke has turned into someone else, that means
he's not her son, so she can do that legally, right?) Anyways, his mother calms down and both his grandfather and mother
tells that the Niwa family has this trait that appears in all of the head males of the family. Once the boy becomes of age (I suppose
around the time puberty comes along), he goes through this period of time where he transform between two people. One of the personalities, ofcourse is his self and the other is Dark Mousy, the
infamous thief that's known for swiping valuables and sweeping ladies off their feet. At this time, his mother & grandfather
explains why he had to go through that weird obstacle course everyday for almost his whole life: it was to train him in preparation for his brief
period as Dark. And the fact that Daisuke will change into Dark due to a reaction in his genes everytime he sees the girl that he likes
(Risa) and Dark will turn back into Daisuke the exact some way (who does Dark likes???) .
If you think that that's bad enough to go through during puberty, Daisuke also has to face a strange kid that keeps tabs on him on every
thing he does. His name is Satoshi Hiwatari and he is in the same class as Daisuke. Satoshi is more or less an orphan since he's the only one
left in his family but he has an adoptive father among the authorities (I'm not sure what's his rank). Satoshi is extremely bright and leads
the police force in Daisuke's area. Satoshi's main objective is to capture Dark and they confront each other many times however Satoshi also
seems to know that Dark is Daisuke's alter ego and he would never lay a hand on Daisuke to hurt him in any way (this is where all the fan
girls start to think the shonen ai kicks in..lol...). Satoshi himself is a very cold and lonely guy that Daisuke often tries to befriend but Satoshi
is hidding a dark secret; he manages to keep it quiet for the first 3 volumes but by the 4th volume, he can no longer hold it back...
Intrigued yet? It's a good manga to go through for fun...not too wordy and plenty of eye candy drawings + the comedy! Highly recommended!
