Playing
with Bots !?
- Spellbinder - 01/11/2001-
Why should any
one want to play with bots?
Well its easy to answer this question really. Because as we all know
Counter-Strike is by the far most popular game out there today. BUT not
every one is so lucky that they have a T1 connection or a lot of LAN pals
to play against. For those people the bot is an excellent replacement.
Also there is the new guy that gets in to a game and doesn't stand a
change, then the bot comes very in handy to train with and build up some
tactics in the playing. And of course all thousands of small clans out
there with around 2-10 members. It isn't always they have other clans to
fight training matches against, and yet again the bot comes in handy.
Does it do any good?
There are lots of bots. Most of them is good to just have some targets
running around to shot at. Others have more or less tactic built in. Those
that stand out would be bots like RealBot
and PODBot.
Both these bots plant the bomb among other things. But the bot that is
closest to my heart is PODBot.
Why PODBot?
The absolutely best bot out today would be PODBot,
it is allsided, easy to configure, and easy to install. It has the most
humanlike way of playing, with radio commands, tactics, and capabilities.
This is what PODBot can do:
Plant/Disarm the bomb. Rescue/Guard the hostages. Open doors, climb
ladders, crouch into vents, jump anywhere a human can jump. Follow and
execute radio commands. Lead & follow groups. Buy weapons after map
layout. Use grenades in strategic places. Pickup weapons. Camp/Snipe.
Swim. Have different skills (configurable). Have different personality's.
Chat. (in several language's)
The father of PODBot, Count Floyd, is now working for the GearBox team
which develops CS:CZ, a single player mod for Counter-Strike with the AI,
and they chosen the best guy to do it for them, so you could understand
that PODBot is something special. People that have been visiting GearBox
for interviews had have the change to try this bot out. And here is what
they said
As a joke, the Gearbox guys put yours truly in a multiplayer game where
the player's names were folks on the CZ team. After a few frustrating
rounds, we later found out that the other players were indeed bots
programmed by Klinge. How good were they? So convincingly real it was
almost eerie. They not only camped, but were also adept with the AWP and
their ability to cover for one another was remarkable. Remember how smart
the Marines were in Half-Life? Imagine bots ten times as intelligent. Gamespy
Interview
Here's what's being said in an interview at HomeLAN: HomeLAN - Obviously,
AI has to be a big consideration in a single player version of
Counter-Strike. How is Gearbox handling this aspect of the game?
Randy Pitchford - We’ve added the author of the POD bot to our team. The
POD bot started as being the highest quality AI bot for Counter-Strike and
has since been improved with many new features and enhancements for the
Condition Zero single player game. We recently let a member of the press
play a multiplayer game with the bots, but we didn’t tell him that the
other players weren’t human. After a half an hour or so we told him that
he was playing with bots and he couldn’t believe it. Interview
So where do I get my hands on this bot?
Here are some place for you to get the PODBot2.5 (last version)
