Animazement 2004

Another year, another anime convention. Animazement was fun as always, if a little scaled down this year. Nonetheless, a good time was had by all. Jaek continues to recover from the trauma induced by last year's brief visit, but his recovery continues to go well. Below, pictures, highlights, and our nitpicks.

The Pictures

Sailor Moon Sightings

Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune Sailor Saturn Damn Chibi-Usa broke my Garnet Rod again! The Outer Senshi. Eternal Sailor Moon, Sailor Venus, Tuxedo Mask, and Sailor Venus with Artemis. And they also glow-in-the-dark!

Assorted Cosplay

The Noir Fanboy Who Got Too Close. Note the bullet holes in his sign. ^_^ Julie's weird friends as the characters from Mantantei Loki Ragnarok Link from The Legend of Zelda Nee-san in her homemade kimono Il Palazzo from Excel Saga Elk from .hack Chibi-Wolfwood and Chibi-Vash! Kawaii! ^_^ Yuna from Final Fantasy X. Sanosuke from Rurouni Kenshin The cast of Naruto The Bride from Kill Bill Ed from Full Metal Alchemist Sephiroth from Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy VII Chloe from Noir We have no clue what this was, but we took a picture anyway. The mask lit up and the guy was on stilts...how could we not? ^_^ Nee-san as a character from Hellsing Vicious, Spike, and Ed from Cowboy Bebop Vash and Dark Vash from Trigun (the manga version) Milly, a sleepy Vash, and Meryl from Trigun. Julie and me as Meryl and Milly from Trigun. Rakka and the Leader from Haibane-Renmei Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke Me in my kimono. Trust me, after wearing Milly's coat around for the morning, it was a lot cooler. Julie in full kimono gear. Both her kimono and obi are over 70 years old; they were Christmas presents purchased off of eBay. Sun Shang Xiang from Dynasty Warriors 4. This young lady also did the panel on Armormaking; the two weapons in her hands are craft foam, foam core, and plastic sheeting! Julie and me in our kimonos, side by side. Awwwww...

Kate's Report

Con highs:

  • Anime Hell- BOB SAPP TIME! God Vs. The Bunny! Corperal Dan! A Comedy of Ninjas! A Tragedy of Ninjas! Good stuff as always.
  • Dealer's Room- Scaled down but nice, nonetheless. Julie bought a sword. I ran in fear and terror. Julie also bought lots of FullMetal Alchemist stuff. Yay. At least I finally got my mits on a copy of Azumanga Daioh...
  • Chika Sakamoto and Akira Kamiya- The voices of Sailor Star Healer and Professor Tomoe were on hand for panels this year. Although I missed the autograph sessions (stupid I-40 construction...sigh), they put on a funny and interesting panel on the differences between male and female voice acting.
  • Fanboy Bebop- Saw it again. Never gets old. "Beenus!"
  • Cosplay- Another good year, with more diversity than last. Naruto was the big thing this year, but unlike the Chis of last year, it didn't really get out of hand. We got compliments on our costumes, too, but next year, I'm dressing up in something that does not consist of 47 layers.
  • The other nice otaku- Met lots of nice people from all over the place. To the group from the midwest whose clutch broke down...I hope you got home okay. ^_^
  • Fan Panels and Demos- Armormaking 101 rocked. I wanted to get out a glue gun and make random pieces of armor. The lady who did the panel is right here if you'd like to see her cool method for making simple anime armor. The sushi demo was cool, too, but it made us hungry. Oh well...
  • Anime Channel- Alright! Now we're talking. Scrapped Princess, One Piece, Ultra Maniac...an excellent and diverse selection of recent anime that got me interested in seeing some new stuff and didn't make my neck strain from trying to read the subtitles over the head of the guy in front of me. Only hazard...it made us want to sit in our rooms until we were very late for things. ^_^
  • My own room- Just me and Julie. My own bed, not stepping over six people to get to the bathroom. It was worth the $87.

Con lows:

  • The scaled-down factor- Don't know what happened, but there weren't as many fan panels, activities, or dealers this year. I'd offer to run a panel, but what would I do..."Making Fun of Anime 101"?
  • Karoke Hell- Went in the main hall, sandwiched between Videos and Anime Hell. Don't get me wrong, some of the performers were very, very good. But it went waaaay out of control and over time, and as a result we lost an hour of Anime Hell. Pedro voice: "NOOOOO!!!" Also, I will never listen to "Who Do You Think You Are?" in the same way ever again. *shudder*
  • Video Contest- Didn't get to see much this year. What I saw was mostly depressing, dramatic, Evanessenc-y stuff. Where's the comedy? The upbeat music? The monkeys?!?
  • Signs- This year's annoying fad: signs along the lines of "Will Glomp for 50 cents," etc. I have no issue with clever signs or characters that carry signs that are part of their costume (such as Genma from Ranma 1/2), but the sheer amounts of shameless whoring and panhandling for attention and money? Ugh...I didn't pay $30 plus hotel and food for clusters of people to shove signs in my face in the hall. Be original, people.
  • Bison- It's way over-rated, and not worth the extra $1. Ostrich is better, anyway. ^_^
