Boy's Defensive Moves

Boy's lacrosse is rough. If girls wore the same equipment as boys, theirs would be a totally different game. Mandatory equipment, in most boy's leagues, include helmet, mouthgaurd, shoulder pads and gloves. Arm pads and rib pads can be worn as well. All of this equipment, plus the cost of the lacrosse stick, is not a small investment. It's easy for some to get caught in the high-pricing game, where it is believed that the more money that is spent on expensive equipment, the better you will be at playing the game. Keep in mind the level of your child and that much of the equipment, especially the first set, can be purchased second-hand, through sports brokers that deal in "trade-in's".

Because of all of this wonderful equipment, the boys are allowed to check with a lot more freedom than the girls.

Body checks and checks to the head are not allowed. Stick checks, poke checks and crosschecks are allowed. Crosschecks can be executed only with the stick held by both hands in a vertical position. Stick checks can be to any area of the stick.

Poke checks are short, repetative checks to the bottom of the opponent's stick or to the bottom hand holding the stick. (This is where the gloves prove useful!) This check can jar the ball out of the opponent's stick.

Penalties for illegal checks and other moves are handled in a variety of ways. One way is to hold a "fast break". This is a specific play that gives the team defending the penality a big advantage at making a goal. Players are also removed from the game for set amounts of time for illegal moves. The team receiving the penalty then plays a man down or short until the offending player is returned to the field.
