Chapter I
When Yamato arrived in the digital world, he realized at once that T.K. was right. Trees were laced with black veins, the grass was either dead or dying, and the sky was gray.
Yamato was in shock. He could scarcely believe what was all around him. Suddenly a shadow fell around him. He looked up and saw a familiar digimon.
"Birdramon!" Yamato yelled. A moment later he realized something was wrong, Birdramon was coming towards him, but she was preparing to attack.
"Meteor Wing!" He heard her scream. It was the name of her attack. Yamato did not stop to wonder why she was attacking, he just ran. After he was a safe distance away he stole a look at Birdramon, and holding onto the digimon's leg was none other than Sora.
That night...
After dark, Yamato made a small campfire, he met another small digimon. It was a black cat that came up to his knee. She had golden stripes and a small flame on her tail.
"Tiaramon!" He heard a feminine voice call. Soon the girl herself came into view. She was small and thin, but radiated strength. She had a waist-length black braid, and startling green eyes. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice betrayed the suspicion she felt.
"Yamato Ishida."
"Gabumon's puppet!" the girl's digimon, Tiaramon spat.
"Gabumon, where is he?" Yamato asked. He had not seen his digimon partner since last time he was in the digital world.
"You don't know? Good." The girl said.
"Why is that good?" Yamato asked.
"Because, the virus has infected him as well." was all the girl said.
"What virus?"
"It makes good digimon bad, but it also infects the digidestened. That only happens when they rejoin their digimon." Tiaramon said matter-of-factly.
"That's why Sora attacked..." Yamato murmered to himself. The girl and Tiaramon didn't seem to hear him, or if they did they didn't show it.
"So what's your name?" Yamato asked her.
"Setsuna."
"Have you ever been here before Setsuna?"
"No but Tai..." Setsuna stopped, a bit of sorrow momentarily darkened her bright green eyes.
"You know Tai?" Yamato asked.
"I did, but then all this happened, and now Tai is just like the others."
Yamato noticed that after Tai was brought up, that Setsuna noticably quieted. Tiaramon had curled up by her digidestened partner, and had fallen asleep.
"I can take the first watch, if you want." Yamato offered.
"Okay." Setsuna said. Moments later she was asleep.
It was awhile later when Yamato heard footsteps. "Yamato," an all too familiar voice called. Moments later Gabumon stood before him. In his had was a digiegg, a tag and a crest. Gabumon thrust the egg and crest into Yamato's hand. "Take these. I must go...the virus..." Gabumon said quickly.
"Gabumon, wait..." Yamato began.
"Can't. Forget about me Yamato, it's safer that way." Gabumon said. He turned and ran. Soon he was gone, without a trace.
Moments later the digiegg hatched, but before Yamato could see his new digimon, it digivolved.
"Hi, I'm Lumon." The small gray head with puppy ears said cheerfully. Yamato nodded his head in recognition, but his eyes were still looking for Gabumon, even though he knew that his original digimon was gone.
Later on Yamato woke Setsuna and told her it was her watch. When she inquired about Lumon, Yamato simply said that Lumon was his.
The next morning Yamato was awakened by a voracious in-training digimon. Lumon wanted to be fed immediately.
"Feed yourself." Yamato said to the digimon, but he was eventually annoyed enough to give the digimon some of the food he brought.
"Are you hungry too?" Yamato asked Setsuna.
"No. I already ate." Yamato nodded and then got his own breakfast.
