Claude's the main male lead in Star Ocean 2. He's an ensign in the Earth Federation, stationed on the ship his father commands, which makes it pretty tough for him. His father, Ronixis Kenni, is a hero of the Earth Federation, and because of that Claude gets "special" treatment that he doesn't want. He hates constantly being in his father's shadow, and wants to assert who he is without his father's influence interfering. A freak accident on a mission to a planet called Milocinnia sends Claude to Expel, which is where his story really begins. (Note: Pay no attention to the spellling discrepancy between the pic and what I have written. It's a translation thing, that's all. ^^)
My Thoughts: Claude's a pretty cool character. My second fav, actually. A teensy bit stereotypical in the hero department, but he does have personality traits that give him more depth.

Here we have the main female lead. Rena's very sweet, compassionate, loves animals and forests; you know, basically your average country girl. There are a few unusual things about her, though. For one thing, she can use healing magic, something no one else on Expel has the power to do. Although magic, called the Heraldry Arts, does exist, recovery magic isn't included. Rena grew up in the village of Arlia, but after her father's death she overheard that she wasn't the real child of Westa, whom she had believed was her mother. She joins Claude because she wants to find out about her real mother, her only clue the pendent she was wearing when Westa found her and her own healing abilities.
My Thoughts: I like Rena. She's sweet, but not so much so that it's unrealistic. She does have her own motives, which is good, since there's an actual reason for her going with Claude other than "I just feel like it". Probably my fav (or maybe second fav) female character.

Celine is a practitioner of the Heraldic Arts, and her spells consist mainly of weather-related ones, such as Starlight, Thunder Cloud, and her ultimate, Meteor Swarm. She's from the small village of Mars, a strong center for training in the Heraldic Arts. One of Celine's passions is treasure hunting, and in fact, when Claude and Rena first meet her, she "persuades" them to go on a treasure hunt to Cross Cave with her. She tends to call everyone "darling" or "sweetheart", which is just part of her character.
My Thoughts: I think Celine's all right, but Nexis doesn't like her very much. I do agree with Nexis on one thing: Celine dresses like a...well, a sex kitten. Just look at the pic! o.O (My apologies to any Celine fans, it's just our opinion. ^^;;)

Ashton is a mercenary - an extremely unlucky one. Claude and Rena first meet him in the Salva Drift, trying to slay a two-headed dragon. Thanks to a small mishap, the dragons ended up posessing him. That's not to say they control him (although that did happen on one occasion); they're just attached to his back. ^^;; The red dragon, Gyoro, breathes fire, and the blue dragon, Ururun, breathes ice. They bicker a lot, which unfortunately leaves Ashton stuck both literally and figuratively in the middle. Ashton's a very strong fighter, second only to Claude. Besides the dragons, there is one very strange thing about him: he likes barrels. A lot. Any village you go into, you can probably find him admiring the local barrels. o.o
My Thoughts: Ashton's pretty cool. He's so close to tying Claude for second favorite character that sometimes I'm not sure who I like better. His affinity for barrels is...weird, but hilarious. Ashton is Nexis' absolute favorite character. ^^

Incredibly hyper and unbelievably perky, Precis develops a huge crush on Claude early on. She's a great mechanic, and she and her father make all sorts of crazy inventions in their hometown of Linga. One of Precis' inventions is Bobot, a round robot that Claude initially mistakes for a remote-controlled car. Bobot helps Precis out a lot, usually by becoming a weapon. Her other weapon is a giant mechanical hand that she controls with a device that looks remarkably like a Sony PlayStation control.
My Thoughts: Although Precis is hyper to the point of occasionally being annoying, I think she's an okay character. I can't say I use her much in the game, though.

Notice the third eye? That's because Opera is from the highly advanced planet Tetragenes, and apparently is the daughter of a wealthy family. She crashed on Expel while looking for her archaeologist boyfriend, Ernest. From what I could gather, she's a bit clingy with Ernest, and likes alcoholic drinks more than is probably healthy.
My Thoughts: I can't really say. I don't know very much about her, because I've never gotten her in my game. (You can either get her or Ashton, and I really like Ashton, so...) From what I hear, she's pretty cool. I might just have to try getting her sometime.

One of Linga's top pharmacists, a talented herbologist, and a good friend of the reknowned linguist Keith, Bowman is a calm, self-confident character. He's not very fond of kids, although he is married to a woman named Nineh.
My Thoughts: I don't like Bowman. He just totally rubs me the wrong way. I mean, come on, the guy's married and he's checking out younger girls the minute he's away from his wife! *shakes head sadly* I know some people like him, though honestly I can't imagine why. (Again, my apologies to anyone who actually does like him.)

This is Opera's boyfriend, the archaeologist from Tetragenes. He came to Expel to study the ruins. The only other thing I know about him is that in the game you can only get him to join you if you already have Opera.
My Thoughts: I know less about Ernest than I do about Opera, so I can't say if I like him or not.

Don't let his age fool you: Leon is actually one powerful little guy. He's a child prodigy, the son of two of the Kingdom of Lacour's top scientists, and so has been pampered much of his life. He's very intelligent, with the childish arrogance to prove it. But, even though he starts out incredibly cocky, he tones down a lot throughout the game. Later on, he really looks up to Claude, and Rena as well; he calls them "Big Brother" and "Big Sister". A lot of his spells are unique; he has water, shadow, and void magic, and although some of his spells do overlap with Celine's and even a few of Rena's, it's his spells like Shadow Flare, Daemon's Gate, and Extinction that make him so useful. He's also gifted with Item Creation, and can master just about anything and everything. (Item Creation is a function in the game, so if you have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry.) If you're wondering about the ears, he has them because he's a Fellpool, so technically he's not from Expel, either, though I've never seen an explanation for why he seems to be the only Fellpool on Expel. Not even his parents have ears like that. Wish I knew why...Oh yeah, it's important to note that you can only have Leon join your group in the game if you're playing from Claude's perspective.
My Thoughts: Leon's my absolute favorite character in the entire game. I just adore him! True, he starts out pretty cocky, but it's more humorous than annoying. Once he loses that cocky edge, though, he's especially adorable. He's also Nexis' veryclose running second favorite.

Dias is the "mysterious swordsman" of the game, and an old friend of Rena's. Due a tragic event in his past, Dias left Arlia Village and has traveled alone ever since. Rena can persuade him to join your cause, but only if you're playing from her perspective. Atleast in Nexis' game, he is the absolute best cook, and apparently can win the "slime" contest pretty easy (mostly because his pressure level is always at or near zero).
My Thoughts: I like Dias about as much as I like Bowman. No, I take that back; I like Dias a little better, but I still think he's a big jerk. (Sorry to those Dias fans out there.) He's supposed to be one of the strongest fighters in the game, but he's not really; Ashton's much stronger than him, and that's not even including Claude. Personally, I've never gotten him, because I haven't played from Rena's view. (Claude's is much more interesting, and besides, if I have to choose between Dias and Leon, I'll take Leon anyday!) However, my sister has, and she's the one who said Dias isn't that great of a fighter. One other thing that bugs me about him: in the manga (such as the pic above), I swear he looks like Piccolo from DBZ. ^^;;

Noel doesn't appear until much later in the game. He's the caretaker of a wildlife preservation, and so has a great love of animals. He's the only one besides Rena who can use healing magic (but I'm not going to tell you why; that would be telling ^~), though most of his spells are attack based. He's pretty calm and level-headed and is somehow linked to the big bad guys of the game. (Don't think for a minute that I'll tell you about that, either. ^^)
My Thoughts: Eh. He's ok. Not spectacular, but definitely better than Dias and Bowman, IMHO, of course. He's got that Brock thing going, though; he never opens his eyes either. ^^;;

If you couldn't tell by looking at the pic, Chisato is a reporter. In fact, she's your typical nosey, do-anything-to-get-a-scoop reporter, but she's good at what she does. She starts out following Claude and company around, printing stories of their adventures, but if you like you can get her to join you. She doesn't appear until later in the game, around the same time as Noel. She's a skilled martial artist, but I can't remember the name of the particular art she's mastered.
My Thoughts: She's ok, bordering on annoying. Personally, I don't think I'd want a reporter following me around everywhere, advertising to the bad guys exactly where we are and what we're doing. And is it just me, or does she remind anyone else of April from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
Shina doesn't appear anywhere in the game, and probably not in the manga, either, so I know next to nothing about her. She's from the Drama CD, which is basically like listening to a story on the radio; it's just the character's voices. I've never so much as seen the cover of the Drama CD (though I'd very much like to), so all I know is what I was able to ask about. Shina attacks Ashton just about every chance she gets, but I wish I knew why. Her sword seems to be sentient, and it looks like she might be Fellpool. If anyone has additional information (or maybe just a handy translation of the Drama CD), that would be great. ^_^
My Thoughts: Even though I barely know anything about Shina, I think she looks like she's pretty cool. When and if I find out more about her, she very well might become my favorite female character. ^^
